Herculaneum Travel Forum

Leaving for Italy next week. We will be staying just outside of Sorrento and are planning on perhaps going to Herculaneum in addition to Pompeii. What is the best way to get to Herculaneum from Sorrento? We will have a rental car.

I don't think I would drive, even though you have a car. I would take the train. It's inexpensive and lets you off very close to both sites. Only 30 minutes to Pompeii, then another 15 minutes on the same line, the Circumvesuviana, to Herculaneum.

Here's the website for the train schedule. (By the way, this is an old style local train - not a sleek Eurostar - so don't expect anything more than an old subway car.)

Also, use the station name Ercolano Scavi for Herculaneum (Scavi means excavations). Use the station name Pompeii Scavi Villa Dei Mi for Pompeii.
