How do you pronounce "Ushuaia" ?

I'm going there in November and I know it's daft but I've never actually heard the name spoken! Hope someone can help me out of my ignorance - cheers

From argentina-guide.com.ar :

' Then the first white men arrived to this area, they found out that the natives referred to this beautiful bay well protected against the winds and surrounded by mountains as "Ooshooia" or "Ouchouaya". The first persons who got in touch with the natives were English speaking sailors and missionaries; therefore the right pronunciation was "Ushuuaia".
Finally the name become "Ushuaia" both for the bay and for the town that started growing around it, until it become the southernmost city in the world.
What is the meaning of this word for the Yamana natives? It simply meant "bay penetrating Westwards" or "bay towards the end " . This description turned out very accurate. '

In Argentina we pronounce it this way:

oo-s-oo-a-ee-a.

oo as in boom
s as in sugar
a as in after
ee as in beef
a as in after

I go with Vic. The locals pronaunce the S as is Salt not as in Sugar!

Galy - yes can't wait - so excited! We go from there for an Antarctic and Chile holiday. We wont be in Ushuaia long but I like to know as much as I can about places before I go - and I know how daft you feel when you dont know correct pronunciations so I wanted to get it right!

I guess you have been there so I'll stop by your pages again and see what you have on there. Any tips gratefully received!

As you commented on the Yerba Mate on my page, and we are dealing with pronouncation here, this is pronaunced "Sherba Mate" (SH like SHE)
