| Grenada | Grenada/Carriacou-What to take? Posted: Sun June 6, 2004 11:30 AM UTC
Will be staying at the La Sagesse Nature Center in Grenada in January, 2005, with a few nights in Carriacou. Need some tips on what to take- other than sunscreen & insect repellant, esp re Carriacou. We need new snorkeling gear- should we buy here and take, or buy there, or hope to use what is provided? What is the cost of bottled water? Should we take a supply of snacks? We enjoy local foods, but can't assume they will be available at midnight. Does anyone know if airport x-rays harm 'throwaway' cameras or flash cards on digital cameras? Would appreciate any input.

I used snorkelling gear provided by my hotel (not La Sagesse) and on an island tour and found it was fine. There are sports shops in St George's which were fairly pricey (we were looking at men's sandals) - you might be able to get snorkelling gear there, but you may find it cheaper at home. There are plenty of supermarkets in the towns where snacks and drinks are very reasonably priced, look out for FoodLand and FoodFair - we kept a stock of Carib beer and crisps in our room for far less than the hotel prices, lol! Bottled water is reasonably priced (can't remember exactly how much) but the tap water is fine to drink too. Have a great trip.

Appreciate your reply, and also your Grenada tip on strong insect repellant. You mentioned taking a mosquito net- is this just for sleeping, or for other times (such as eating in your room)? Thanks, Ron

Hi Ron,
I would just take the net to sleep under, it wasn't so annoying that I felt a need to eat under one too (plus when I was awake I stood a chance of getting them before they got me!). We would squirt the room with an insect repellent before we went out, I think it was called 'Raid' - the hotel supplied it, but I also saw it in the supermarkets. I think I was quite unfortunate to be bitten so much - they barely touched my boyfriend at all! So hopefully you will be lucky. I'm going to build my Grenada pages soon I hope, but just holler if there is anything you want to know. Rachael :-)

Planning on La Sagesse also. Have found any more on the resort? Just back from Belize and looking for something similar.

JohnB- Here is a clip from a recent TripAdvisor review:
"La Sagesse is a fantastic, affordable retreat on Grenada, and as my girlfriend Nancy and I discovered on our recent romantic holiday there, a perfect place to escape the stresses of everyday life. The beachfront rooms are nicely decorated and local art hangs from the walls. There are no TV's or phones to interrupt the sounds of the the waves, just 30 feet or so outside your windows. The staff is incredibly friendly, which we treasure while on vacation." The whole review is at http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g147295 if you are interested. It sounds like you would like it.

Buy your snorkelling gear and take it with you. What is available for rent (not much) is pricey and not always in good shape. You could probably make someone very happy by selling it to them before you leave.
Carriacou is a great place - I highly recommend the Paradise Inn on Paradise Beach in L'Esterre. From Carricaou, arrange a day trip to the Tobago Cays. Your hotel will do t his for you or you can arrange independently with the delightful Cuthbert Snagg (near the jetty in Hillsborough)

Curiousx-
Due to Ivan, I've rearranged my accomodations in Grenada- will now spend 4 nights at La Sagesse, then 3 nights on Carriacou at the Paradise Inn, then back to Grenada for 2 nights. Thanks for the advice, I do wish to boat over to the Tobago Cays.

Trip was great- except for the broken ribs, mosquitoes, and Manchineel tree blistering- all of which could have been avoided by being more careful. I'm in the process of creating my Grenada and Carriacou travel pages, so will post details there.

Busted ribs ? Machineel ? Sounds as though you had the full Caribbean treatment...I'll look forward to your pages
