Malaria protection / Diving

Hi everybody,

I would like to know your experience. What kind of repelent did you use? Do you recommend moskito net?

Another question is about diving in late June. Do you have some exp. with diving during this summer monsoon? We will stay in Malindi area but can go to Mombasa as well.

Many thanks

Martin

I took Lariam pills for Malaria protection and I certainly can't recommand it. Had some orientation problems and slight trembles. Better spend some extra bucks and get Malarone which has less side effects.

I am a mossie magnet. The minute I arrive in a mosquito-ridden area they start calling all their mates and telling them it's dinner time! I have used nets (but find that I can even get them stuck inside the nets). I have used coils burning all night (but worry I'll burn the place down) and I've used all kinds of lotions and creams. Nothing works completely... I tend to use a combination of all of the above depending on where I am. I also find that buying repellent locally helps (seems they know what their own mosquitos don't like). I always carry antiseptics and stuff to put on a bite too. Oh the misery of mossies!

Medicines though. I take the doctor's advice depending on the areas I'll be visiting (apparently some medicines are better than others depending on the type of mossie in a given area):

I THINK THE BEST THING IS GETTING AN INJECTION OR MEDICINE TO PROTECT YOU FROM MALARIA THEN AT LEAST U R PROTECTED AGAINST IT.

I would definitely recommend anti-malaria drugs - I took Malarone, which is a short course, with no ill effects.
Also, to stop getting bitten, use a good repellent which includes Deet. I started off using an organic one in Zanzibar and got LOTS of bites!
And yes take a mosquito net if your hotel doesn't supply one (they should). If you get one at your accommodation, check it for holes and spray repellent inside.

I got two injections before I left home. One was for against maralia and the other was for against yellow fever. I think Kenya requires foreing travellers to get an injection against yellow fever.

I carried along with a bottle of repellent and also there equiped with a moskito net in every accommodation where I stayed in.

If you are visiting the coast you are guaranteed to be bitten by mosquitos and Malaria tablets are a must.
Larium (Mefloquine) is the best for Kenya.
There are weaker tablets available but they are not so effective.
Always sleep under a mosquito net.
It gets dark in Kenya at 19:00hrs so spray on some repellent which contains DEET.
Before sleeping spray your bedroom with mosquito / fly spray which is available from supermarkets every where and is very cheap.

A valuable tip: When staying at hotels you will find the mosquito nets are rolled up over the bed.
Mosquitos love the dark and hate light.
Whilst the nets are rolled up they tend to fly under the beds and stay there until it's evening.
Later when you go to bed and put the net down they are in side the net and ready to bite you.
That's why it's essentual to spray under and around the bed.
