| Skardu | info about k2 base camp trek Posted: Sat May 29, 2004 11:33 AM UTC
hello,
I am planning to go to k2 basecamp this year in july, I have the following questions and i will be thankful to anybody who can answer, 1. How much does the porters charge per day? 2. Are we are responsible for their food and accomodation during the trek? 3. Do normal Gas cylinders work there or there r any specific ones? 4. Do we need any special shoes i.e shoes with spikes for the trek or the normal ones would do? 5. Any other specific equipment that we may need? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help us. Javad. |

Hi Javad,
I think you really need to research this a lot more! You cannot trek to K2 Base Camp with out permission from the ministry of tourism and permit as it's a controlled border area. How many are in your group? How long do you plan to trek for? My group of 6 had 40 porters, yes you are responsible for their food and "accommodation" although they will probably use shelters, but you will need to provide them with decent footwear and clothing if they don't have it, I'm sure you wouldn't want any dying of exposure of getting cut feet then not being able to walk!!!! Normal gas cylinders? What you are planning is a long trek, gas is useless (cost and eco reasons) for the amount you will be cooking, you need liquid fuel stoves. Shoes with spikes? Unless you are sprinting up they would be useless, but no you won't need crampons unless you cross Gondogoro La in which case they would help. Have a look on the net for more info and contact a trekking agency!!
