Amsterdam to Bern overnight?
Posted: Wed May 26, 2004 08:39 PM UTC
Greetings VTers

Recently, I purchased a rail pass for an upcoming trip to Europe. I had planned on taking an overnight train from Amsterdam to Bern on the night of June 16, and spending the next day in Interlaken. When I received my Eurrail pass, it came with a booklet listing departure times and arrival times between different destinations, but I could not find any trains departing Amsterdam and arriving in Bern. Is there an overnight train that runs direct from Amsterdam to Bern? If not, what alternatives do I have with the trip fast approaching and no hotel reservations for the night of June 16?

Thanks,

-Brian

Hi Brian

It seems a bit impossible this one.

The latest train goes at 5 at night and gets to Bern at 1:30.

OR you could go early next morning at 7 and arrive in Bern at 3.

The only alternative is that you take a late train from Amsterdam and you then have to wait in another Dutch city like Venlo or Nijmegen for an hour or 5.

Hmz - tough decision - good luck

BTW - if you dont have a place to sleep in Holland - yet you need to spend the night out of the streets - go to Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam. They have 24 hour restaurants and bars etc, which is safer then staying in a city or train station overnight.

Hi.

There is no overnight train from Amsterdam to Bern (there was one a few years ago), you can take the CityNightLine from Amsterdam to Basel or Zürich (you can sleep a little longer when travelling to Zürich...) and a connecting train to Bern, Interlaken or anywhere in Switzerland.
For the CityNightLine (www.citynightline.ch) like most night trains you need a reservation/supplement. Depending on your day of travel you need to reserve well in advance as the train does get very full. You can make the reservation at most stations in europe (or send me a mail for other solutions)

For train times in Europe check www.rail.ch (english homepage of the Swiss Federal Railways) or www.bahn.de (homepage of the german railways) you can find nearly every train in europe on them.

Greetings,
mabü
