| Oahu | Oahu Transportation, Nightlife, and Food! Posted: Wed May 19, 2004 05:09 PM UTC
Hi all!
I'll be making my very first trip to Oahu, HI next week and have got a bunch of questions that I hope you guys can help me with. I'd really appreciate any advice you can offer. I'll be staying at 2500 Kuhio Avenue on Waikiki Beach. Feell free to email me directly if you'd prefer. Thanks! 1. What is the cheapest way to get from the hotel to Waikiki Beach? City buses? 2. Do public transportation buses go all around the island? What is the adult fare? Can you buy weekly bus passes? 3. Where is the club/entertainment area? Is it close to Waikiki beach? What is the cheapest way to get home from nightclubs? 4. Are grocery stores located around Honolulu? I'd really prefer to pick up groceries than waste money on junk food. 5. Are they any restaurants/nightclubs/bars that you would definitely recommend going to? 6. What are the "must see" attractions on the island? I do love "off the beaten path" stuff though. 7. Does anyone know where I can play some games of pick-up soccer in the Honolulu area? Thanks again! André |

Lots of question, hope I havae the answers.
1. Walk. Kuhio Ave is only two blocks to the Waikiki beach. All beach sand is open to everyone, their are walkways next to hotels and a full beach on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki. 2. Yes. Buses go all around and is very cheap transportation. Last time there the cost was $1.50. Ask for a transfer if you get off, to get on again. 3. Waikiki and the Honolulu area by the Aloha Tower. Walk, if in Waikiki, and Bus from Honolulu. 4. Yes. There are tourist mini markets, ABC's and they are expensive. Try the Food Pantry only a couple of blocks away, on Kuhio. Also Star,Foodland, Safeway, and Times. 5. Duke's Canoe Club on Kalakaua , Waikiki. About 2 blocks away from your hotel for Dining and fun times. Also the Shorebird at the Reef, off Lewer's St. Waikiki. Moose McGillicuddy's for beer and fun. 6. Pearl Harbor. Climb up to top of Diamond Head, bring a flashlight for the tunnel walk. 900 steps, at least it feels like it, but the journey is worth it. Punch Bowl lookout. Lighthouse, base of Diamond Head. North Shore Pipeline, Waimea sands and surf. Zoo i Waikiki. 7, Try either the Kapiolani Park, near the zoo off Kalakaua and Monsarrat, Diamond Head side of Waikiki, or try the park across from the Ala Wai canal, over the bridge on McCully Street. Aloha

Kuhio address to Aloha Towers, 1 Aloha Tower Drive is about 4 miles. Take out of Waikiki, the Ala Moana Blve, main street from Waikiki through Honolulu, water front.
The other area across the street from the Aloha Tower is Restaurant Row at 500 Ala Moana Blve, about 3 1/2 miles from 2500 Kuhio. This has the well known Ocean Club and their website is: www. oceanclubonline.com. Aloha

Thanks again!
Are the locals nightspots and the tourist nightspots the same? That's how it is in Miami (where I lived for 12 years).

No, locals enjoy the same nightclubs, but not the same bars. Bars in each town are more local, Kaneohe, Kialua, Pearl City, Downtown, Ewa, Haleiwa all have a mixture of local, transplant, and visitor. aloha

5. Check out Ono Hawaiian Food in east waikiki, for local hawaiian food. Look for reviews in mine and other VT members pages.
