I recently met someone who lives in Omsk, Russia. She wants to come visit me in California. I need to borrow $550 from my parents to pay the balance of her airline ticket but they want to be sure she is who she says she is and I'm not being scammed. Does anyone live in Omsk or know where I can verify a name and address of someone living in Omsk?

Be carefull, I have heard more stories of people, young men who are being asked for money. make sure she can visit you, it will be difficult for her to get a visa. Tell her instead you will visit her. I bet you nshe will tel you it is unsafe in Russia and not a good idea!

99% this is scam. Have you checked Russian bride scam pages? They are very impressive.

While it is possible for her to get a visa, if she is young and attractive her probability of getting a visa is low. I've met several Russian women who visit my home city of San Francisco and one was living as a guest in my home there until I moved to Saint Petersburg, her home town in Russia a year ago.
It is not a wise idea to send any money to strangers unless you don't mind giving it to unknown people for unknown uses. Giving it to a local street homeless person in your city would make more, but still very little, sense.
If you think she is real, doubtful, offer to visit her instead and see her reaction. Why not go visit Russia, it will be a lot of fun and it will be a life changing experience.

i'm really curious to know where/how you met her. i had an ad on a dating site, and had someone email me from Omsk and we've been "chatting", but after reading your message, i'm wondering if i'm being setup for a potential scam as well.

Actually, I myself have been exchanging e-mails to a lady in Omsk who had contacted me originally. Now while I'm sure that this could very well be a scam, let's take a more possitive point of view and look at the other side of the coin. First off, I had mentioned to the lady to whom I am writing about myself going over there to visit. Her reaction to this possibilty was being "excited" rather than turned off by the prospect. Secondly, I have researched Russia. It is an extremely poor economy where their average salary is usually below minimum. This is not the United States. Granted, even if this isn't a scam, the lady in question could perhaps be praying for a better life for her and her future family. The average home owner here in the states is light years beyond the "hovels" that many of these poor devils must contend with every day of their over-worked/under-paid lives. And please realize that I am not a naive individual, but am still open-minded enough to investigate all the facts while not totally pre-judging someone who just might be more sincere than all of you might realize. Anyway, to the fella who began this post, "good luck". The best advice I've seen that you should consider here is asking her about "you" visiting "her" country "and" research that scam site. Also, if you should go over there, find out all you can about the area that you can, and how people over there are towards americans in general. Hope things work out.

I don't know about that...... I HAVE been there are I have seen a lot of the city AND been in many homes there. It is not quite that bad.

You are exactly right, it is not the United States so unless you see first hand (and understand that the cost are also different and relative to the incomes) then you would understand that it is not so bad there.

Sure, there are scammers and this woman may be legitimate. I have know some women that were misinformed BUT be aware that this is a VERY COMMON scam.

hello take it from me it is inpossible for a russian lady to get a visa only if they have met the man then they will have to get a invitation from you.she is a scammer no doubt, i have lived in omsk for a month i know it well has i am engaged to a wonderful lady, that is my second home i know every thing about the people they are warm ,friendly people i have had no problems at all. take no notice of the mess brave balder has told you you would not think you are in russia the people do not want to escape thats alot of crap.has he been to omsk himself?. any way if you are intrested in a lady from omsk i have some very good contacts. they are all friends of my g/f i know them all .
