Going to mexico

Just browsing prices, i didnt think going to mexico was this expensive. Was looking for cheap flight options from DC to Guanajuato, flying into mexico city i'd assume, but the best im finding is $480 or so. Is it cheaper to get to somewhere more touristy like Cancun? Is rail an option? I guess these are just all dumb questions, but I was just doing research, and looking to go in october or around then.

I'm in Aguascalientes, Mexico right now. I've been travelling around the country somewhat the past several weeks.

Generally your best bet is to fly to Mexico City or Guadalajara. Then take a bus to your final destination. I'd recommend "ETN" as they're very nice and safe.

Another option is to find an inexpensive charter flight to one of the resorts and then bus/fly from there.

You have time to keep searching. With taxes included of about 100 dollars 480 is not way out of line, but you can beat it. If you can find a price of $350 you are doing well. Be sure you are comparing similar flights - because DC-Mexico City is a different flight than Washington-Leon which is I think the closest airport to Guanajuato. You might just find a Leon flight from Houston or Dallas which is cheaper. If there will be stops you might consider a flight out of Baltimore. Rail is not an option. There may be some cheaper flights to Cancun, but you said you were thinking of going to Mexico (not to an international resort which happens to be in Mexico.) I do not know why the flights into Mexico City are generally expensive. It may have something to do with the government control of flights or to the limited loads for high altitude takeoffs, but it is real. The good news is that once you are in Mexico food, hotel, drink and travel will be much less expensive than the US for value. Good luck, Bob

I think the first question is:

- What do you want to do?
- Where do you want to go?

There are thousands of touristic destinations within Mexico for all kinds of taste and budget. Do you want a beach? pyramids? colonial places?

When you've got that answer then you should start looking for the flight. Cheapest destinatios (airfare talking) would be Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.

Mexico City is nearby pyramids, woods and colonial places, Monterrey is a modern city and I'm not sure of any other touristic places around, Guadalajara is nearby touristic beaches, virgin beaches, colonial places, woods, etc.

Enjoy.

Guanajuato is where I want to go. Though I'm sure It's not the best location to go, It's for visiting some friends. So that's why I was looking for fares there. I was just considering that maybe if it would be that much cheaper to go to another place like Cancun and meeting them there.

I think Guanajuato is an amazing place to visit! I have been to many places in Mexico and it is one of my most favourite. Last weekend I was in Zacatecas, which is also an old silver mining community, but I still prefer Guanajuato.

Find an inexpensive flight to a major center and then take a luxury bus there.

Robert

P.S. Did you know that ATA flies into Guadalajara? They often have very good rates.

Well, it woud definetely be cheaper if you fly directly to Cancun though you have to pay your accomodation which will be more expensive than in Guanajuato. What about your friends? They will either have to fly to Cancun or drive about 20 hours to arrive to Cancun or take a bus that will take about 24 hours to make it there. Once there they will have to pay for their accomodation and meals. I sincerily don't think they will like the idea, it would be easier and cheaper to fly to Washington for them.

You have 2 options, fly to Mexico City and take a bus from the airport to Leon for USD$25.00, from there take another bus to Guanajuato for around USD$10.00. The second option would be flying directly to Leon for a little bit higher price and take a bus to Guanajuato.

Most people think Mexico as a small, cheap and old fashioned country but I must say it is not. It can take you more than 4 driving days from corner to corner and prices are mostly the same as in the US for most things.

Enjoy your trip!
