a short-notice visit to Copenhagen! Where should I stay?
Posted: Sat May 8, 2004 01:08 AM UTC
On rather short notice (by my standards) I'm visiting Denmark on business next week, during the week. To save the company a little money, I'm extending my stay by flying from Billund into Copenhagen on Friday 14 May, and returning back to the Boston area on Sunday 16 May, for a little sightseeing. (It's that old trick, stay over a Saturday, and the air fare drops substantially.)

So, I'm trying to figure out where to stay. I've figured out that I can catch a train from the airport to the central train station in Copenhagen, and that this train comes through the airport every 20 minutes. Well, um, can someone confirm for me that the central train station is near Tivoli? Is this a good area to book a hotel in?

Thanks,
Richard

tivoli is right next to the main train station.
this area is also the main hotel area of copenhagen and a fine place to stay if you wanna be central.

Also, if you walk out from the train station in the direction of Tivoli, you'll find the Tourist information centre that can help you with accommodation.
Last summer I booked a private room in central Copenhagen with their help. It was nice and not so expensive.
Their website is www.woco.dk

A year ago, I stayed in the Scandic Copenhagen, which is just a few blocks from the train station (and Tivoli) - see www.scandic-hotel.com.

This is a business class hotel facing a small lake in the city. It's not far from Tivoli, and not a bad neighborhood to walk around in.

SAS Radisson is also well placed near Tivoli and the train station :)
All nightlife is around the area ;)
Don't forget to see the little mermaid of Copenhague! ... It's the symbol of Copenhague, and she lost her head not only one !!! Really :( ... Poor lady...

At night, just to have a drink with local people, try Baron and Baroness...on the street where is tivoli and the train station. Also Bolton's is famous with different ambients...from techno, all style, elegant :)

Enjoy!

There is a restaurant just the the west (towards the train station) of the main entrance (north side) to Tivoli that has a funny custom - when you order a yard or half-yard of beer, when they deliver to oversized glass, you must trade in of your shoes for a slipper made out of woven grass - your shoe is held hostage for the (expensive) beer glass and stand.

When we were ready to leave, we walked over to the bar and asked the bartender for my shoe back. The shoes are all suspended in wire baskets hung from the ceiling that the bartender has to pull down (almost whacking a couple of Japanese tourists in the process, but they thought it was quite funny once they saw my slipper). Fortunately (or not), I got my old shoe back without too much trouble.

Oh, what did I eat? Danish pork ribs or something like that. The official spousal unit later told me that this is a big import to the U.S. so I was getting it much closer to home in Copenhagen...

A lot of interesting replies!

Let me follow up on my earlier question. In my investigations of good hotels, and also where I want to spend my time, I came across a hotel by the name of Ibsens, which is near Norreport station. Is it safe to say that I can catch the train directly from the airport to Norreport station? Also, does anyone have any opinions on this hotel?

Thanks again everyone for your help!

right in the center in a very safe area, by the lakes.
i actually work at a backpacker hotel in the same street.

And yes, the airport train stops at Nörreport too. In fact, I get it from Sweden (via Copenhagen airport) to Nörreport in the mornings :-)

That's great to know, on both fronts. I had read through some of the web sites regarding rail travel in Copenhagen, but I wasn't sure whether I'd gotten good information. It's not that I can't read, it's just good to have independent corroboration of the info.

So, amusingly enough, I'm in town just in time to see the Royal Wedding this Friday...a nice bit of serendipity. I read that the street traffic will be closed off for the ceremony, but I assume that the trains will be running normally, which means I'll be arriving in time to see the show. It's great, I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks a bunch everyone!

the street where ibsens hotel is(vendersgade) will stay open all day, but it's ony around 500 meters from the chuch where the wedding is, so you will be smack in the center if you decide to stay there.

I have an exam at the British Council that morning so I have to go to Copenhagen whether I want to or not that day! Most colleagues also living in Sweden have decided to take the day off to avoid the traffic chaos...
