| Reggio di Calabria | San Pietro and Borgia exploration Posted: Tue April 27, 2004 03:40 PM UTC
Mia Nonna's family is from San Pietro and Calabria. I will arrive in Italy on July 22nd and wish to explore these two areas in hopes of understanding more about the history. Which airport is best to arrive at, which train. is it safe for a woman travelling alone? I will have about 9 days to explore there. My grandmother's name is Concetta Grandinetti and her parents were both orphans who worked for the same household. Her mother (who had the same name) was the cleaning lady and her father Giovanni was the gardener. They travelled to Ellis Island in their youth to settle in Columbia County New York. My Great Aunt Francesca Grandinetti married Phil Laporta, who was also straight from Calabria. It has been difficult for my family to find out any information about family in Italy, since my grnadmother's parents were orphans. Any information about travel to these 2 towns would be greatly appreciated.

I just did a 2 week vacation to Italy and had to be in the region as well. I travel often to Italy as I used to live there and here is my suggestion.
If you fly Al Italia you can often find flights that are the same price to Rome as it is to Napoli. I would suggest to you to go through to Napoli if you can (you will still most likely have a stop-over in Rome or Milano) Anyway, this will cut down on your train time considerably rather then going from Rome. Here is another suggestion: Fly to London and from Stanstead take ryan air to Bari or Rome. Their flights are very cheap. see: www.ryanair.com I actually flew to Napoli (Naples) then got a flight (very expensive) to Catania. But you are looking at about a $400 domestic flight. However, it all depends if you have more time or money. Good luck! Sorella
