| La Spezia | Walking from train station (centrale) in La Spezia Posted: Mon April 26, 2004 11:51 PM UTC
Hi - I am taking a wonderful 10th anniversary trip with my husband end of May to Italy and will be picking up a car at Avis in La Spezia(after 3 days in Cinque Terre to head to Tuscany). It looks like Avis is less than a km away and would like to know if walking south from station possible? In general is La Spezia pedestrian friendly? Thanks to anyone in advance who could help.
(Sorry don't have picture to post but just to give you idea about us we are a mid thirties couple, who married as we started med school - after ten amazing and challenging years that included the addition of twin girls to our family and transition (for me) from professional life to full time motherhood we are finally taking a dream vacation - sans children! - to Italy) |

Hi, sorry unsure where the Avis store is in La Spezia but the town certainly is pedestrian friendly. You have to walk the first minute or 2 from the station along a fairly busy road but after that you can walk all the way to the sea front through the town centre which is virtually traffic free. It's a lovely place to spend a couple of hours on a summers day if you get the time. In saying that i guess Florence is part of your plans & that's just a fantastic city that you won't want to leave.

Thank you 'Ghosthunter' - a follow up - the Avis place is on the corner of via Roma and Via Fratelli Rosselli (near Piazza Cavour). From piecing together info from several sites I take it that exiting the station one would find oneself on via Paleocapa (very difficult to find address location for the station in La Spezia or a good map that shows it- even the tour books I've gotten do not cover La Spezia in any detail) so my plan is to walk through Piazza Saint Bon down Via Fume to Piazza Garibaldi through to Via Del Prione and then either all the way to Via Fratelli Rosa or turn on Via Dei Melle and then onto Via Roma to reach Avis. Any suggestions or advice if this is not the more "pedestrian way" to go.
Also I regret to say we will not be going to Florence this trip - we were trying not to do too much on this one trip. But after extensive reading about all parts of Italy my plan is to come back and do a trip of Florence, the Lake Region and Venice and then another trip concentrating on more southern sites - Sicily, Amalfi Coast ect. We will be heading to Rome after Tuscany this trip. Thanks again - any further advice would be most appreciated.

Mapblast shows the train station (as well as some museums, churches). You can type in the address of Avis, Via Fratelli Rosselli 74/76, in La Spezia, Italy, or just use this.
http://www.mapblast.com/(5ezo3pbahf02mw5521urnd3v) Then zoom in to the second level (not the most detailed level). Then click the northwester corner of the map, to recenter it, and you'll see the icon for the train station. It says "Ferrovie dello stato de La Spezia". It's in the middle of where the train track break into three tracks. Hope this helps. Cristina

In Cinque Terre don't forget to visit Lerici and panoramic road to Tellaro... it's beautiful..!
Instead, in Lerici keep away from "Da Paolino" restaurant: it's a really scam, bad seafood and very expensive!! Have a nice journey!
