Hitra Travel Forum

I am going to be traveling soon and Hitra is on my agenda. What is it like in Hitra? What are the accomadations like there? Are there any historical places there? What kind of things are there to do there? What are the people like there? What language do they speak there? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Svensen

Don't know about any accomondation, but I can tell you this: Usually people mention fishing, and hiking as thingfs to do on Hitra. It's a big island, so there is space to do that.

It is sothern Norways biggest island with about 4000 inhabitants. During the summer the number of people living on the island swells up. The island is most known for salmonfarms, hunting- and outdoor activities.

It's connected with the mainland by a tunnel (some 5500 meters)

There is a museum on the island (I've never been in that museum). It depicts tha culture on the coast. Don't know if they have exbitions with texts in anything else than norwegian.

Generally; You'll have no trouble speaking english. Most people do speak english, albeit a little rusty. A trik is to learn a few frases in norwegian such as Hei (Hello), Takk (Thank you) and so on. People are usually more positive towards you.

It's a great place for SCUBA diving as well.
I'm going up there myself in 3 week for some awsome diving.

There several diving resorts on the Island, so you might find somthing for you....
The language is, ofcourse, NORWEGIAN.

I have a cabin on this island. Its a very nice place. You must fish if you go there.
