I don't know if you are still checking this post but there is one area near Skardu that I would highly recommend. You can actually check out some pics of the area on my Hushe page (not too hard to find I think I am still the only page for Hushe). Basically you could get a jeep from Skardu to Hushe and camp a night there and then walk up the Gondogoro Glacier towards K7 and Laila Peak, which is a stunning are where you will pass high-altitude meadows dotted with shepherd settlements which are used by local shepherds in the summer months and you will then see less and less greenery as you move up towards the glacier areas, the valley itself is hemmed-in by spectacular (but comparatively low) snowy mountains one the absolutely sticks in my mind is Laila Peak - perhaps one of the most photogenic I saw in my month in Pakistan. Check out the following photography link to get you excited: http://www.adventurephotographs.com/karakoram/gondogoro_glacier/index.asp

You will need a good travel company who are flexible enough to organise the logistics for you (or a very adventurous spirit if you are organising it yourself!!) I went with a company called Adveture Travel who are based in Skardu and use local Balti guides and porters who know the area well their website is http://www.adventure-touroperator.com/main.html

I also have some info on a Skardu page if you are interested. Have fun and I would love to hear how your trip went...I am so keen to get back to Pakistan sometime in the next few years!!
