Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Reno Reno For two days then on to San Francisco
Posted: Sun April 18, 2004 09:27 PM UTC
My wife and I are flying to Reno, staying for 2 nights (a Sunday and Monday in July) and then driving to San Francisco, where we'll stay for six days, two in wine country. We are also planning to go Lake Tahoe and spend one night there. My question is what should we see and do in the Reno area? Any suggestions for sightseeing, restaurants and hotels would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The highway that runs along the Truckee to Lake Tahoe, that Top of the World refered to , is 89. It also runs past Squaw Valley which is worth a turn off the highway even in the summer. The views from High Camp are outstanding and the ice rink, swimming pool and spa are open year round.

Every July there is a celebration of the arts in downtown Reno with lots of inexpensive events both indoors and outdoors. I haven't seen a calendar of this years events yet but you could check the web site at http://www.renoisartown.com/

The portion of the Truckee River that runs through downtown Reno has been transformed into a kayak course. You can rent kayaks at a shop near Wingfield Park. For a tamer ride the shop also rents bicycles.

If you prefer indoor events the Riverside Movie Theater has matinee prices until 5 or 6 pm.

Since you will be here on a Sunday and Monday you will miss my favorite restaurant, a little french bistro so close to the real thing you may foget you are in Reno unless you look out the window., but if you let me know what type of food you like I could make some recommendations.

For music and a drink, Roxy's Bistro in the Eldorado features 102 martinis along with a piano player and usually a singer. They also have a happy hour with reduced drink prices. Or you could try EJ's Cafe a new place in the Riverside Artist Lofts building. They feature Cajun style food and live jazz. Right now the jazz is limited to a few nights a week so you may want to check ahead of time to see if they have music on Sunday night. If you want to eat dinner and listen to the music make your reservations after 8pm and well in advance.
