Freiburg im Breisgau Directions by bus or tram?
Posted: Sat April 17, 2004 09:22 PM UTC
Hello,

I will be visiting Freiburg during the end of May, and would like to know how to go from the Hauptbanhof to Muensterplatz by either bus or tram. The hotel (Rappen) should be right across from the Cathedral from what I have read, if that helps any.

It's sometimes easy for me to get lost and I don't speak German, so any advice on how to get transportation maps once there would also be much appreciated!

Thanks!
Don

Hello Don

From Main Railway Station (Hauptbahnhof) of Freiburg im Breisgau to Muensterplatz it is 1.7 KM and only 6 mins drive.

I'm sending you the route map in personal VT email. May be your can walk ? Its very easy as it is shown in the map. There must must be trams or buses going from the railway station to muenster platz because its very important place of the city.

Best Wishes,
Umer.

Thanks very much for the info. There's also an "english" link at the www.Suedbadenbus.de site. I found the Hauptbahnhoff without any problem, but cannot find Muensterplatz on the drop-down list (Munzingen Kaplaneigasse is the closest name I could find - maybe it is close?)

Another site that I found on VT is:

http://www.rvf.de/Fahrplanauskunft/110Frset.html

One of the routes recommended is:

from Freiburg Hbf (Stadtbahn) on Stadtbahn 4 Frbg Günterstal Dorfstraße to Freiburg Bertoldsbrunnen

from Freiburg Bertoldsbrunnen to Münsterplatz 13 about 0.3 km (about 5 minutes)

Hopefully it wouldn't be too hard to walk with luggage from Freiburg Bertoldsbrunnen - I don't know if there would be taxis there, as I have read that this is a car-free zone. Any advice on that part would be wecome also! :)

Lucky you! Be sure to visit the Schauinsland mountain (see my Freiburg and Black Forest pages for pictures). The scenery across to France (and in good weather down to the Alps) is amazing.

As for the directions - I can only second those you suggest walking unless you have very heavy luggage. It's not far.

Exactly, you could walk there in 15 minutes OR you can take ANY tram from the top of the train station (look south when you get out of the train) going east (direction left). The tram costs 1.80euro per ride but if you plan to use it a lot or are with 2-5 people, maybe get the Regio24 option that is 6.50 or so. Anyway, get off at Bertold's Brunnen (2 stops). You will see a large medieval-looking gate called Martinstor. Go the opposite direction, up that long street less than 100 meters and keep looking right. You'll see the Munster no problem, trust me on that on.

OR Ask someone where the Mu(e)nster. Just say Munster, like Eddie Munster, it's not the correct pronounciation but they should understand you no problem. It will be a huge church that will be quite difficult to miss. With any luck the farmer's market will be happening as you go to the church.

good luck and email if you'd like more info.

Thanks again for all the great info! The trip from the Hbf to the hotel sounds very easy now! The City of Freiburg also mailed me a free color brochure packed with all kinds of things to do, and for anyone else who is visiting, they have an excellent website online:

http://www.freiburg-online.com/freiburg/english/online/html/virtualcitytour/frameset-vct.html

Here, you can take a "virtual tour" of the City, and see over 1,100 pictures of Freiburg as you "walk" around!

I will also be driving around the Black Forest, taking the following route recommended in the Frommer's Guide:

http://www.frommers.com/destinations/freiburgimbreisgau/0856010011.html

This includes a visit to Schauinsland, where I plan to take in the views from the Seilbahn! I'm looking forward to the trip - from the pictures that I have seen, the Black Forest is a stunningly beautiful region!Anyone know where to purchase a good driving map?

Thanks again!

Don

All the above information is true ---

For better orientation only! You can take each of these trams/streetcars from Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) to Bertoldsbrunnen:

No 1 labelled Littenweiler
No 4 labelled Günterstal
No 6 labelled Zähringen
No 5 labelled Rieselfeld

Just cross the two tram tracks and you are the right site

Note there are NO busses from station to Münster ... The innercity is completely bus and car free ...
