Re: restaurant....rent a car.... Posted: Sat April 17, 2004 10:13 AM UTC
Hi Maria,
The Riu Rincon Andaluz, is very close to Puerto Banus, a district outside the town of Marbella. The area is quite expensive , but a lovely place to stay. Bars and restaurants tend to facilitate for tourists therefore will be more expensive. There are many more restaurants and bars in Marbella city some much cheaper.
I would suggest you hire a car at the airport, it will make your stay much easier, but bear in mind that the traffic is very busy at that time of year, especially around Puerto Banus, try to avoid coming and going during peak times.
For Gibraltar I would highly recommend (if you dont have a car) to catch an early morning bus from San Pedro de Alcantara (a few km from Puerto Banus) to La Linea and walk over the border, it takes about 20 minutes to walk. This is a much cheaper option than catching the tourist coaches, and will give you much more freedom.
If you have a car, there are many other areas you could explore, any of the white villages, such as Mijas or the lovely city of Ronda, built straddling a deep gorge.
Need any more help, just contact me, Stace :0)

As Stace has said in Marbella town restaurants are cheaper, just tell us the kind of food you like and we can suggest a few places ... fish, tapas, or for a special occassion
for restaurants even if in receptions they always suggest this chain called Pesquera, try to avoid, expensive for the quality or really bad service ... there are many much better.....
Near you in San Pedro there is a really good one called Alfredo, good meat and fish at really good prices, full of locals!

Hi, I was just there in March. I stayed at the Riu Rincon Andaluz too. It was very nice. Check out my pictures on my Marbella pages. We got around by bus everywhere, so I can't help you out with the car. The hotel is a little far from the cheaper stuff. So you can't walk to those places. I don't have too many more suggestions. Stacy and Carmen have great suggestions. Definitely go to Ronda if you can. It is beautiful. Also make sure you see the old town in Marbella. Puerto Banus is very expensive (at least for my budget). But it's good for nightclubs. Check out my Marbella travel pages, as well as Stacy's and Carmen's. Have a great trip. Marbella is wonderful! Nereid

Greetings! Stace, Carmen, Nereid! Thank you so much for the information. This is my husband’s first visit to Europe, and my first visit to Spain (I am from Europe). I love fish, and I am planning to eat lots of seafood. ;)) Local restaurants with great food and decent price are my choice. I would appreciate your advice. We are not sure about renting a car. Is it hard to get around with bus? How about Taxi? Is it expensive? Nereid, I am planning to bring my notebook. Do you happen to know if there is a wireless network in the hotel? I am sure I will have more questions. Thanks again. :))

About WiFi, we were looking a few weeks ago which hotels in our area have it, and I do not think this one has it. There are internet cafes, but prices are silly sometimes. A friend was using one in Marbella that was not too expensive, but in Marbella center, for walking distance San Pedro is a best option for you.
Buses are reliable, but traffic jams no... hehehe... The main bus station of San Pedro is at entrance near your place, and there are frecuent buses from San Pedro to Marbella, stopping in Puerto Banus where you will stay.
With bus you can go to Gibraltar, Ronda, Malaga easily
Taxis are not expensive compared to other countries, but in bussy times are diffiult to get, specially at night after the pub in puerto banus .....
Hope this helps
for fish.... i will get a few directions for you

Hi, I'm not really sure if there is wireless access for you to use your notebook in the hotel, but there are 2 computers in the lobby with high speed internet that you can use. They were expensive though. If I remember correctly, they were about .50 euro for 2 minutes. As far as transportation, I found that the taxis were pricey, but necessary for night time when the buses stop running. We took the bus most places. It was cheap and efficient. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel on the Marbella line. The San Pedro Station is a 10 minute walk from the hotel, if you want to catch a bus to other cities. Nereid

That is quite expensive at .5 of a Euro per hour. You should find internet cafes for about 2.5 or 3 euros per hour locally.
Buses I rarely use, but I know that local services are quite regular and inexpensive. Taxies are a good option but will obviously cost more, if I recall the last taxi I used was from Puerto Banus to Marbella center at about 03:00 in the morning ant it cost about 7 Euros.
If you enjoy fish and seafood, the beaches have many Chiringuitos, these are small restaurants located right on the beaches. They serve a selection of fish grilled over open fires (in a sand filled hull of a boat) and other seafood. Try the Boquerones (grilled sardines) they are gorgeous and the Chipirones (fried baby squid). You will find them on all the beaches, but best to avoid the highly touristic beaches. In Marbella there are many, but the best that the locals use are located around the fishing port (this is not the port that most tourists see with the sport boats, but located about 400 meters further east with the fishing boats).
There is a chain of three restaurants in Marbella city called ´La Venencia´ the food is normally very good, they do fish and other dishes and is frequented by tourists and locals. Problem is in the summer months they are very busy and service tends to suffer as a result.
There are a few other fish restaurants, I´m sure Carmen will know the best :0)

Stace, Thank you again. I am making notes, and almost ready to put together a personalized little travel book. I found this wonderful website: http://www.wguides.com/city/56/city_districts.cfm They offer more information on Marbella than any travel book I can actually find here. What is the "black/blood pudding"? Thanks, Maria

Black Blood pudding.... actually its called ´Morcilla´ is a sausage normally originating from the north of Spain, especially in the region called Burgos. Its actually much nicer than it sounds, although its made of pigs blood and rice. It is normally cut into discs and fried. I like it myself, and as my girlfriends family live in Burgos we normally buy some if we visit or the family bring some if they are visiting Marbella. You will find it in tapas bars and restaurants here in the south, but it is not so common. It is very similar to English black pudding, but contains rice.
Back last September, during a VT meeting in Madrid, it was served as a tapa, a well known VT member from California really liked it, but was a bit horrified when she found out what it was, but had to admit she loved the flavor.
In other regions there are some variation, in Andalucia you can occassionally find it without rice, but with onion (its not very common). In the Canary islands it has spices and cinnamon and is quite sweet, but I´ve never seen this variety myself.
Hope this helps,
Stace :0)

I guess black pudding is similar to the "hungarian véres hurka". Thanks again. Maria
