My traveling companion is wanting to fly out of Urumqi, are there any international flights or quick links so he can get back to the UK?

He can fly to Almaty and connect on flights to Europe from there. Kazakhstan maintains a consulate in Urumqi at 31 Kunming Street. He'll need to get a special transit visa there first.

Hi Dave,
There are many ways to get out Xinjiang. If youre in Urumqi the closest flight out is From Alam-ata Kazahkhstan. Your friend could also fly to Islamabad, Pakistan from Urumqi and get a flight to the UK from their, but he would need a Pakistani visa and that can only be obtained from Beijing in China. Likewise he would need a visa for most of the countries in the region for transiting, so unless hes prepared to do some travelling in side China and put up with bueraucracy he should stick to his normal plans. We will have arrived from Pakistan but only have a single entry VISA, is it easy to pick up a transit VISA for Kazakstan?

Its worth trying, but these ex-soviet diplomats are notorious for ruining travel plans. If all else fails get to Beijing and fly out from there straight home.
