Apart from internal flights, can any one suggest a more economical way of travelling ? I would also like to break journey, perhaps soemwhere in the middle. Need some advise please.

The most economical way to get from HCMC to Hanoi is to get an open ticket from a travel company like Sinh Cafe
See their webpage at http://www.sinhcafe.com/english_info/info_opentour.htm

The ticket allows you stop off at a few places on the way and then you get the next bus (need 1 days notice of the bus you are going to get). Cost now seems to be USD29 for the whole journey and these tickets can be obtained from almost any travel agent in Saigon.

If you're planning to go directly to hanoi which will take more than a day overland, I think taking an overnight sleeper train with beds is a good option because that would be much more comfortable than sitting up on a bus for such a long time.
Of course the train also stops at all the major destinations such as nha trang, hue, danang (hoi an) if u are interested.

Check out Vietnam's railway official website for noncommissioned prices

I can highly recommend the train in Vietnam, especially the sleepers. They are very comfortable. I would stop at da Nang and go to Hoi An. It is a good place to see other areas from or if you want alot to do in one place then Hue.

I really like Hoi An and Hue so either is a good stop off. Plenty to do in Hue without extra expense but a car to the tombs but Hoi An is a gateway to China beach, My Son and other places. Check my pages for ideas or some of the other posts.

If you use the train, go to the shop and get bottles of water and some munchies for the way. You can get food at most of the stations, a good pho bo costs hardly anything.

Have fun. Vietnam is a great place.

Hoi An or Hue, are great places to break your trip.
As you are short with time, I guess the night train is a great idea to save time and money. You will better have a couple of days in Saigon and Hanoi, so that will probably leave you with only one place in the center. Personaly I prefer Hoi An, but if you prefer Temples, Tombs, aso, Hue is a better place
