Antarctica, GAP, and traveling from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia
Posted: Mon April 12, 2004 06:33 PM UTC
I'm planning to go on the GAP trip on Nov. 20 and am planning to use miles to fly as far as Buenos Aires. From there, I plan to buy a flight from BA to Ushuaia. Has anyone done this? Would you recommend booking through a US agent or one in Argentina?

Also, does anyone know how far apart the airports are in BA? I think I might be flighting into EZE from New York, but have to transfer to Newberry - is that easy?

Also, how long would everyone recommend in Buenos Aires? I'm worried that my bag will be big since I need heavy clothes for Antarctica and it'll be hard to travel - any ideas on a place I can leave my luggage for a few days in BA?

Hi there,
We're actually booked for the GAP cruise to Antarctica on the same date! Based on past experiences, it seemed cheaper to book flights directly with the airlines through the website (or to call their office in B.A. and not the one here in the U.S.).

If you are flying w/ Aerolineas Argentina, they have a free shuttle that takes you from EZE to Newberry. Otherwise, based on my research it would take around 45 minutes-1 hour to get to newberry.

Unfortunately, I cannot give you a more informative advice. Feel free to email/contact me before the trip especially since we'll be on the same boat!!!

It's definitly cheaper to book a flight in Argentina. We couldn't do it directly at the Aerolineas website, cause they quote prices only for locals. We did it through a local operator whom we found on the net. If you want his name/email, drop me a word. The traveling time between airports takes 30-45 min.
Enjoy

Hi,

You mentioned that you had the name of a local operator in Argentina where you booked your BA-USH flight - could you tell me their name and how you arranged that? Have you already been on your trip?

Thanks,

Carly

Hi! I was in Antarctica early January this year.
Yes, bought a ticket from a VT member (Nefi) who owns a travel agency in BA. So, contact him & he will be able to give you good rates. I checked through local as well as websites. His price is better.

If you fly from EZE to New York, you need at least 3-4 hours. Make sure you've enough time from Ushuaia to BA. & if possible, spend at least 3 nights in BA. It's a great city!

As for Antarctica, most ships have washers & dryers for passengers. So, you don't have to bring too much other than a good parka & different layers of clothing. Do remember to bring at least 2 pairs of gloves. They do get wet easily while on the zodiacs. Waterproof pants & boots are musts.

Check my pages if you need more details.

Hi Sharrie,

If you have the name and email of the travel agent in BA, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!
CJ
