Schloss Neuschwanstein Travelling To and From
Posted: Mon April 12, 2004 05:38 PM UTC
I was wondering the best way/cost wise to travel from Darmstadt to Neuschwanstein. I will be bringing my girlfriend to Darmstadt in June to meet my parents(they are US Military) and she has always wanted to see a Castle, so I figured Id show her Neuschwanstein. If I wanted to drive, would I need an IDP? And for train rides, Bahn.de is confusing and was wondering if anyone knew ticket prices from Darmstadt to Neuschwanstein or somewhere in the vicinity where walking to and from the castle wouldnt be a problem. Thank you in advance!

Hi,

it's really worth while to consider taking the train to Füssen. According to bahn.de it would cost some 90 EURO for 2 persons (single fare), but it would take between 5 and 8 hours (by car 3-4 if you're lucky), all for one way. A good option then is taking a "schönes Wochenendeticket" (nice weekend-ticket), which would cost only 28 EURO for a roundtrip. You would have to change trains more often then, but I think it's worth a try, especially if you stay overnight!

Enjoy your trip,
P.

Hi, if your parents are US military, the best way to go to Neuschwanstein is through USO. They do tours there. Some may even be leaving from Darmstadt, others from Heidelberg or Mannheim.
If you want to go on your own, you can take a train from Darmstadt to Füssen (change in Augsburg). It takes about 5 1/2 hours and costs 60 Euro one way. If you book ahead, this price can be reduced. From Füssen there are busses up to the castle.
