Take a peek at the Peak in Hong Kong? Posted: Mon April 12, 2004 02:20 PM UTC
It takes approximately 25 minutes for the Airport Express train to go from the airport to Central, however there are other factors you need to consider for your excursion: 1. The queue for the Peak Tram. You won't know how long this line is, so I would advise taking the #15 bus from Central Station to the top of Victoria Peak. 2. Check-in time for your connecting flight. Usually it's 90 minutes before departure, so you should try to return to the Airport Express Central Station around 15:00. 3. Immigration and security queues. Hong Kong's airport is quite efficient but you should still allocate 30 minutes to go through customs upon arrival and departure. With this information in mind, a noon arrival at Hong Kong airport should put you on the Airport Express around 12:30 giving you a 13:00 arrival at Central. The 15 bus has frequent departures from Central Station so let's suppose you get on one that leaves at 13:20. That will put you atop the Peak around 13:45. From 14:00 to 14:30 you enjoy a half hour of magnificent views of Hong Kong!! Then at 14:40 it's back on the bus to Central where you will check in for your flight at the Airport Express station. You might gain a little more time on the Peak by investing in a quick taxi immediately upon arrival at Central, but 30 minutes is sufficient for a quick peek at the Peak and the bus departures are frequent enough to accomodate this conservative plan.

If you want to save travelling time, you could also visit Lantau Island. Other than the Big Bhudda, there are many scenic & untouched places to explore. Maybe a hour long stroll along the beaches between Mui Wo, Cheung Sha or Tai O = )

Hello Confusius and Bryan!
Thank you very very much for your information! I'm very happy to know that we will be able to enjoy Hong Kong within our short transit. (Oh, I wish we have longer time!)
We've never been to Lantau Island... I'll study more about it :-)
And I think wei will visit Victoria Peak....we visited there several years ago...and the brilliant scenery touched me alot! I love it!
Thank you very much!
Ayurin

I don't know if you have enough time to get to Victoria Peak! You need to be at the bording gates at least 1 hour prior to departure. Return trip via Airport Express to HK Station is at least 1 hour. Which only leaves you two hours. I don't know how long it takes to get to the Peak from HK Station. It will be quite a rushed experience. Lantau Island is a better choice.

Hello VIncent!
Thank you very much for your help :-)
Hmmm, Victoria Peak....we'd like to go....
Going by taxi or by express train, which do you think faster? (I'm afraid taxi would be caught in traffic jam...)
Thanks Ayurin

The express train for sure will get to Hong Kong Island faster....you never know what the road condition is like.
But on the other hand, you don't want to miss your flight...so I'll also suggest you to go for staying at Lantau Isalnd. Visit the Big Bhudda and the monastary, it's a famous attraction in HK.

It would be ridiculous to take the taxi for it is actually more expensive, especially since they charge so much once you pass a bridge or tunnel. From Hong Kong Island, it could cost from $ 350 up to $500 HKD one way = (
Round trip on Airport Express: $ 180 HKD/person

You should take Airport Express ($100 one way) to HK Island over a taxi ride (over $300). However, seeing there is a time constraint, you can only go as far as Central and admire the city buildings.
Lantau Island is close. But it takes about 35-45min one way from Tung Chung to Big Buddha. So, you're still under some time constraints. You can take either bus/taxi to Tung Chung from the airport.

Hello everyone!
Thank you very much.... very helpful information!
From what you all said above, now I have an idea....
I take the airport express train to the center, then I will take a taxi towards Victoria Peak. If it takes too much time, then I will give up visiting the peak.and will come back to the center. (but at least we will be able to admire the skyscrapers!)
If we are lucky, we will reach the peak! (Hopefully)
Oh, if we had more time, we'd visit the Lantau Island, and would enjoy yummy Chinese dim sum.. yum yum.
Thanks again Ayurin

I will eat at Maxim restaurant in the airport :-) during our transit on our way to Dubai from Osaka. We have a few hours to wait.(from 13:40 to 16:10) So it's good time for our late lunch :-)

Hello Everyone!!
We made it!... We could visit the Victoria Peak and enjoyed the magnificent view!! Thank you for all your help :-)
The airport expres is very easy to get on and took us to Hong Kong Station in only 23 minutes! And then we took No.15 Bus. About 35 minutes to the Peak. Then the magnificent scenery! Wow! We had enough time to eat lunch there.... at Marche restaurant (at 6th and 7th floor of Peak tram tower.... this restaurant is really a great scenery spot!)
And, luckily, there were no queue for the Peak Tram, we could get on it at once and enjoyed the several minutes steep trip to the bottom. Then we had a good time on the open top (without roof ) bus (No.15C Bus).!
Everything was perfect! Thanks for your information and help!
Ayurin :-)
