Canberra Looking for Advice!
Posted: Mon April 5, 2004 12:11 AM UTC
My husband and I will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this summer and would like to travel from Canada to somewhere special with great food, friendly staff, and spotless accommodations. Sightseeing and sandy beaches would be a bonus! Any advice from travelers would sure be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi
Where are you guys planning on flying to?
What you could possibly do is go to Toronto for a few days and visit Niagra on the lake. It's supposed to be extremely romantic under the falls when they're all lit up at night.
Toronto has some great sight seeing opportunities as well. We have the CN Tower, Royal Ontario Museum, Casa Loma, Skydome, Centre Island, etc.
If you travel a couple hours north of Toronto you'll find a very touristic town called "Wasaga Beach." It has beautiful beaches and was voted to have had the most beautiful sunset in Canada. There's lots of shops, sightseeing, and it's mainly very hilly up there with a gorgeous view if you do a little bit of hiking up the Bruce Trail.
Don't hesitate to ask me any other questions about Toronto, or it's surrounding area; I'd be glad to help. Enjoy your trip to Canada :)

Hi there...I noticed your query starts with Canberra so I am assuming it is there you want to go to. I was there a fort night ago..my first time ( yes I am an aussie, shame on me) I was just so taken with in. I found the people courteous, polite and hospitable. The city compact, and clean. The bus driver went out of his route to drop us off at the apartment we were staying at. Parliment house Old and New were a wonderful treat. And the Australian War memorial moved me to tears. The Australian Institute of Sport was informative as well. The pace of the place was wonderful especially when contrasted against the hectic major cities of our nation. You won't find beaches there tho, and I suspect that it might be cold in winter, possible the equivalent to your fall. (when I was in Canada in Oct it felt like an Australian winter to me) If you want beaches that time of the year you may have to consider Queensland and the north of Australia.

The posting is a little confusing. I thought the other way too.
Hi, to Cheriec. There is a bit more confusion. I think that you may have posted in the Canberra forum just because it's the Australian Capital. !!??
It's about the last place a tourist would visit on an Australian look-see visit - and that from a veteren Aussie . You have two choices as your next step :-
1. Do a bit of homework with "paper" literature from your local library on Australia or advice/ info through your "local" Australian Embassy or similar.
Sydney or Melbourne are the first two cities to
consider. Canberra is a "very inland" city and exists only to be the capital.
or 2. In Virtual Tourist, on the starting home page, on the left hand top "search" box enter one of those cities and click on < places> and study the resultant Australian page(s).
You can do that with all six state capitals, and Darwin
, capital of the Northern Territory, not a state but very interesting. Give those avenues a try.
That way you will get a full cross-section of what Australia has to offer.
Good luck....L.

If you find the "clicking on Members" technique a bit cumbersome - you are looking for the homepage of members living in that city - you may prefer to put the city (or State name) in the "search" box and click on < keywords >. That seems a little more direct...Go for it ...L.

Further searching tips. Back to the searching via "Places". Be sure to scroll right down the resultant page - don't stop at the ad part way down. There is a huge wealth of information assembled there. Just place your curser where it turns to a hand and click the magic ! There is a great quantity of information from visitors as well as locals. Perhaps even the most concentrated gathering of info. Good searching.....L.

My God! Don't go to Canberra if that's what you're after! Head to Sydney, Brisbane or even better - to Noosa and the Sunshine Coast.

I lived in Brisbane for 10 years and made weekly trips to the Sunny Coast in summer time (are you coming for your summer or the Aussie summer?). The place has some of the best beaches on the east coast, amazing hotels in sublime locations (right on the beach/river/main shopping strip), and mouthwatering restaurants - lots of fresh fresh fish, huge steaks and all other yummy grub!

This is where I would recommend!

If your looking for sandy beaches Canberra is not the place to come!. Do you wish to come to Australia during the Canadian summer? keep in mind that we are in the southern hemisphere and our seasons are reversed (our winter = your summer) Canberra can be quite cold during winter.

If your after somewhere that is warm and will have beaches, my suggestion would be Cairns/Port Douglass.

Perth has the best beaches in Australia - It just doesn't have the hype of the Queensland beaches.

Rottnest, Broome, Exmouth, Albany,

All have amazing and pristine beaches

Not withstanding some great Suburban beaches Cottesloe, Scarborough,
