Tournai VT meeting - Discovering Tournai ?
Posted: Fri April 2, 2004 05:36 AM UTC
Nowadays Tournai is just a small provincial town and that's probably why too many people are overlooking it. However, this is the oldest town in Belgium and its past is extremely glorious (root of the French kingdom) !! The Cathedral and the Belfry are both on the World Heritage list.
Not that I want to advertise it (just a little bit ;-), but have a look to my VT page to make your idea by yourself...

Norali wish to vist it, Myriam suggested to organise a meeting and Mique agreed... well, who else is interested ?
Waw, that would be my first VT meeting and I'd organise it ;-)

Next question is when? May-June timeframe sounds ok to me: more chance to have some nice weather but well, we are in Belgium so we can never tell...
Anyway even if it is raining like hell, with 8 museums, we could still easily find sth to do...
"Les 4 corteges" takes place the second WE of june, this is a folkloric parade but, shame on me, I don't know much more, since this always falled during my exams time, I've never seen it... This year could be a nice opportunity ;-)

Let me know your ideas, suggestions...

Great idea, count me in! May-June seems the best thing, because lots of people will be away for holidays during the summer I suppose.
Let me know when you have the exact date!

as said before, i'm very interested. But it depends a bit on the date.

Since Tournai is a bit far for a day trip (around 4 hours one way).. what are the options of securing myself a sleeping place in Tournai or surroundings?

I'm interested as well. I've never been to Tournay before.
If I'm in the country I will certainly come.

Since nobody mentionned any preference, let set the date to the Sunday 13th june, this should be the WE of these "4 corteges". I will add the event into the VT calendar...

> Sjalen, what I have learned at school is that both Tournai and Tongeren were the oldest town of Belgium. Both of them have been founded by the Romans. Now only www.tongeren.be claim to be "De oudste stad van Belgie"... Not too sure about the details ;-)

>Mique, about accomodation, you have choice, it mainly depends on your budget: in Tournai itself, there is a camping, a youth hostel and a few hotels...
About the hotels, the major options are :
* Hôtel Cathédrale : in the center but have heard some bad comments about it....
* Hôtel d'Alcantara : a new hotel in the center, probably the most expensive option but could really be nice. There was an article on the news about it. If you can understand French : http://www.couleurbrique.be/renover/A_044960.asp
* Panoramique : 10 min drive from the center, on the St Aubert Mount, the view there should be wonderful.
More options/details from http://www.tournai.be/fr/commerces/index.php?page=63
Hower as previously mentionned, tournai is just a small town, if you prefer the "big cities", you could eventually stay in Lille, a 20 minutes drive from Ty...

Euh, the 13th of June is Election Day, so I don't know if this is really the ideal day?

Mmmh too bad, completely forgot (ignored ;-) that one, too bad for the "4 corteges", let's postpone to the next WE... Saturday or Sunday ? I'll already insert the 20th June in the calendar...

Thanks for the notice ;-))

JF,
I just read on the Tournai website that "Les 4 cortèges" will take place on June 6th. I won't be available on that weekend, though so June 27th would be perfect for me!!

Count me in, if I don't have to work...
On the 27th maybe I'll be able to come in the afternoon.
12-13 June I'm at home, so no problem, except the elections
19-20 working time...:(

I'm sure we can arrange something...:)

**Post-election meeting** is that a safe time for meeting ? LoL

**With the tamalous** I din't recall it was during that time. Meeting tamalous in Madagascar, interesting but time-consuming (their chatting :))), I guess. The youngs are much more interesting.

For all of us coming from around Antwerp (that includes you, Caroline!!), could we make arrangements to drive together? I've seen that by train it will take over 2 hours on a Sunday. I will gladly drive but I prefer some company.
Of course, if y'all prefer to go by train, I'll do that too.
