| Wadi Halfa' | Lake Nasser Ferry??? Posted: Thu April 1, 2004 09:37 PM UTC
Hi All,
I am planning a trip from Cairo to Cape Town next summer and was wondering if anyone knows anything about rumours that the Lake Nasser passenger ferry is to be indefinatly cancelled? As we are on foot, it is a vital connection. Any comments welcome, including from anyone who may have done the whole trip before! Cheers guys, Ben |

I'm unsure about whether or not the ferry will be cancelled. I did the trip a few years ago, but I only went as far as Zimbabwe. Which way are you going to go? I went via the CAR and then Zaire (now Congo), Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. Because of the troubles in Congo, I'm sure this route is not possible, so I assume you are going to go via Ethiopia/Kenya. (Too bad, 'cause the Congo River steamer was the highlight of my trip!). This route is much easier on the body. (The CAR -- apart from being corrupt beyond belief -- as well as Congo, have brutally bad roads but, of course, that's all part of the experience). Be warned that there have been incidences of intra-city buses being held up by bandits on the Kenya side of the Ethio-Kenyan border.
If the ferry is cancelled, you might be able to get in on a camel train. I met a guy who had done that. Have a great trip. Berhe

Hallo,
last year in NovemberI travelled from Khartoum to Cairo, by train, ship and train. At this time I did not hear about cancelling the passenger ferry. If you are interested to get my impressions from the trip by train to Wadi Halfa and crossing the Big Lake see my homepage www.arabicexperience.com Good luck Linda
