Day trip out of BCN
Posted: Thu April 1, 2004 09:48 AM UTC
Hello! I'm planning a trip to Barcelona in the middle of May. That's my first visit to Spain and I would like to see a bit more than just one city. Can anyone suggest a good day trip out of BCN?
All tips are very appreciated :-)
Thanks!
M.

hi! it depends on how days you stay in Barcelona because Barcelona itself has many things to see!
As a day trip (again this depends on what you want)

1. Sitges is a small village close to Barcelona(half an hour, you can visit the village, eat there and go shopping and go to the beach, if the weather is good enought)
http://www.sitges.com/
(i think this website is only in Catalan)

2.I recomend Tarragona, very easy day trip to go by train(1 hour), and it's a very interesting town, full of Roman ruins.

(it's in Catalan)

3.Another option(like 2/half hours from Barcelona) is you like Dali, visit the museum in Figueres(Girona) it's spectacular.
http://www.salvador-dali.org/esp/intro/intro.htm
this year it's Dali's centenary so it's a good excuse to know more about thei Catalan artist.
well, i hope i can help you!
Enjoy, anyway,
eva

Thanks Eva!
I'm planning to stay in BCN 3 full days and the 4th would be reserved for a day out, but it's not finalized yet...

day trips? you've got quite a lot to choose from:

a) Girona, a small citu north of Barcelona. At about one hour driving and more or less the same by train. Very nice old quarter.

b) Mountain of Monsterrat: an awsome-shaped Mountain west of BCN. less than one hour driving. yu also got train going there.

c) Costa Brava: east of Giroa and North of barcelona between one and 2 hours driving (depending on where you exactly go) lo of beautiful beaches and small vilages (

Montserrat is an awesome day trip. When I was in Barcelona, we had planned to visit Montserrat for just a few hours, but we ended up staying the whole day! It's easy to get there. You don't need to drive, you can take the subway from Barcelona to Montserrat. I wrote more info on my Serra de Monsterrat page if you're interested.

hola!

My prefered place for spending one day is Cadaques, but you have to spend a night there, the best is to wake up in such a place!
Or I also recomend a car a tour along the Costa Brava (like Cala Monjoi to Cap de Creus).
Inconvenient: is far from Bcn.

Montserrat: too catholic, too catalan, not my stile
Museum Dali: long queus
Sitges: nice place, beach, Museum interesting

Other interesting places must be ruins of Tarragona, some monaster place. Poblet and Santes Creus.

Take a car because the landscape is incredible in spring.

happy visit

Actually, even if Montserrat is a Catholic site, anyone can enjoy it. Two of the girls I went there with are atheists, and they loved it. Actually, one of the atheists was the one who suggested we go! I'm Catholic and I didn't know about it until she told me. Even if religious things don't interest you, the nature, mountains, and view are absolutely stunning. Some people go camping or hiking at Montserrat. And even the religious statues and sculptures along the pathway can be appreciated because they're beautiful pieces of art.

and well,

it might be too catalan as well, but for a toruist, it can be interesting to experience this "too catalan" place. you can allways learn something aboth others' cultures.

I mean, If I traveled to wherever (le'ts say Poland, as I plan to do this summer) I'd prefer to experience their culture, history and local customs rather than sticking to the touristic masses.

Hola!
It is nice to have different opinions here!

Sorry. I agree Montserrat is interesting, different than other cultures, nice views… but if I was one single day in Catalonia (out of Bcn) I would never go there.

I'm living here and is pretended to be the symbol of my country but I have only gone twice. I like religions, spirituality, to pray… difficult to explain my feelings.
When you go to a radical catholic school or you get addicted or you are against of this religion.

Hola!

The teatro museo salvador dali in Figueres is definitely a must see activity. Take a look at my travel tips on my Barcelona page.

Spending the night in Cadaques is also great!

Have a great trip, Barcelona is wonderful!
