| Arnhem | Help! Market Garden accommodation!! Posted: Tue March 30, 2004 03:52 PM UTC
Help!
I need a single room in Arnhem for the weekend of the 16th - 21st September. I cannot get any availability for anywhere online. I am travelling from Northern Ireland to meet up with my Grandfather who is travelling from England for the 60th anniversary celebrations. My Grandad was on the bridge with Johnny Frost - and I have booked my flight so that I can be there with Grandad for the 60th Anniversary - but I can't find anywhere to stay!!! (Grandad has a room booked as he is travelling with an organised group) Any suggestions VERY gratefully received! HEEEEELLPP! |

It seems all hotel in a 10 km radius are fully booked in that period. The closest 3-star hotel with rooms available is Huis te Eerbeek - Prof. Weberlaan 1, Eerbeek (at 12km).
Tel: +31-313-650290 Can you give any indication how much money you can spend on the room? Is a camping an option for you? PJ

Thank you for such a quick reply!
I am happy to sleep on a sofa if it means I have somewhere to put my head down! I would be happy to camp but my partner is not happy about letting me camp as I am travelling on my own. I can't really spend more than 65 euro on a room so I am on a tight budget! I have a friend who lives in Hilversum - I might have to see if she'll put me up - What is the transport like if I want to get about late at night? (If I end up a long way out?)

Maybe Pavlik_NL can help you out; I think he will react to your posting. He's living at Arnhem and might know someone who can help you out.
Or try the Youth hostel: http://www.stayokay.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Herbe PJ

Hi,
or try a bit further out, for example Doetinchem - about 40 mins by train, which goes till midnight or even later on weekends: http://www.immerloo.freeler.nl/doetinchem/doetinchem.html This B&B also has a link to one in Arnhem or Oosterbeek, but probably both will be full (but you never know). There's also a hotel called De Graafschap in Doetinchem, but it should be even more expensive. Where we live are even more B&B's, small hotels or homestays, but it's even further out and definitely no public transport late at night - but if you can't find anything else, just drop a line! Another hotel I found a bit closer to Arnhem in Duiven (10 mins) or Didam (25 mins, also trainstation): http://www.bmghotelgroep.nl/duiven.htm http://www.liemershof.nl/ Hope it helps, good luck! P.

Ah it reminds of an other place nearby - that I haven't thought of it earlier.
Try www.rhederoord.nl - on "overnachtingen" you will find the rates and phone no./ email (at the bottom) The site is in Dutch though, so if you need any help... The prices are really ok, and the location is superb! It was actually one of the locations where the movie "a bridge too far was filmed! Before it was an international school... But that's a different story! P.

I stayed at Landgoed Avegoor (www.avegoor.nl) just 10 days ago. Very good hotel but possibly way above your budget. Have a look at my Ellecom page for an impression.
Try some special addresses: www.hetoudepostkantoor.nl in Brummen (about 20 car minutes from Arnhem). It's an old post office! Also in Brummen: Spaensweerd, tel. +31 575 561104 (no e-mail unfortunately). It's an old estate with four antique furnitured rooms. A room with breakfast is € 90. Or try hotel Dreyeroord in Oosterbeek. An old time favourite. I used to deliver the paper there as a teenager! It is 3 minute walk to the train station which takes you to Arnhem in 6 minutes. € 60 per room. http://www.hotel-assist.nl/oosterbeek/hotel_dreyer

Dear Chelley,
Let me first tell you that in the case you will not find a place to stay, I offer you hereby our guestroom as shelter for the mentioned period ! It will be an honour to shelter one of the brave veterans of the battle of Arnhem. The only point is that in the same period we expect also a Russian family-member to be visiting us. Anyway, our house is welcoming you in case of emergency, so let that take any pressure away from your shoulders. If the programm allows it I would be as well honoured to show you around for a few times, to some nice spots in Arnhem vicinity. Furthermore I will start informing about possible places to find accomodations. To start a very "of the beaten path" one in Driel (just ten minutes by bus to Arnhem). It's a cosy small Bed & Breakfast in the riverlands. A website: http://www.dutch-farmholidays.com/nladressen/b484.htm Their e-mail: rutjensland@betuwe.net Their phonenumber: +31 26 3708614 Good luck with your hunting and remember, there's no pressure anymore as you will be sheltered anyway! Best regards, Paul

Thank you everyone!!!
You have all been so incredibly helpful! I love VT! Let me clarify. I am going to be on my own. My grandfather is a veteran of the battle and he will be staying at the West End Hotel. I couldn't get a room there on the 17 - 19th, so that is why I am looking for somewhere for myself. I will probably stay there on the 16th and the 20th. I am now considering staying in a trekkershuut at one of the nearby campsites on the Friday, Saturday , Sunday. I don't drive so I would be relying on public transport and taxis to get about. I am so astounded by all the help you have offered. Thank you so much - I hope to keep in touch - and perhaps PJ I will be able to introduce you to my Grandad in September! Chelley x

It's a pity that you are not here the first Saturday in September because that is the day of the Airborne Walk in Oosterbeek in memory of the Battle of Arnhem.
http://www.xs4all.nl/~lva/airborne/airborne.html I walked that walk (10-15 or 25 kms) many times as a teenager although I admit I did the short walk and just people-watched all day! When we lived there, my father often used to find remnants of the war (bullets and even more dangerous stuff) whilst gardening. Anyway, if you do visit Arnhem, don't miss the Airborne Museum.

Chelley,
Just organize a VT-meeting for the weekend. If you want to meet some Dutch VT-members set it up in the meetings calendar at http://www.virtualtourist.com/vt/cl/2004-09-00/711d9/ and post a second inviotation here at the travel forum. PJ

Why not try to book a room in Nijmegen, just 10 minutes by train,, plenty hotels, absolutely sure you'll find a room there around your budget.
