I am visiting the Provence area in late may for 2-3 days, and I'm having trouble decided where to visit & where to book accomodation. I'll probably only have time to visit 2-3 places. Which are more worth my time: Arles, Avignon, Les Baux, St. Remy, Nimes, Pont du gard, etc..?.
Also, which places are the best to spend the night?
All the places you've mentioned are very rich in history and things to see, so you'd struggle to fit them all into your trip. My choices would be Nimes and Arles.
may be i know more about other countries than mine i don t know very well this area but had a big emotion when i visited Les Baux de Provence, Cucugnan and other cities around, of course french people read Daudet and Pagnol who are from this area
vsiting all little village is very important lionel
Provence is really a fairly large area. If you have no car and only 2-3 days, you'll waste too much time on buses if you try to see a lot. I'd choose Avignon and St. Remy but I also love Les Baux and from there it's not far to St. Remy. People forget Carpentras and the area to the north... also very beautiful as in Crillon-Le-Brave.
Without a car, you should definately stay in a larger town/city - I'd recommend either Aix or Arles. Then from either one, via the tourist office you can take a tour bus to visit some of the smaller villages which you mentioned. With only 2-3 days, this would be your best way to get a flavor for the area.
You are soo lucky you are visiting the Provence, it´s one of the nicest areas of France. I should definately visit Arles, St remy, nimes and maybe pont du gard (it takes a drive). I didn´t like Avignon, the bridge was a big disappointment and there were lots of tourist busses. I should look for a place to stay in the triangle nimes, arles, salon the Provence, than you´re close to all the nice villages. Take a look on my provence page for more tips.
a french made a mistake, sorry ! i was bad and would like to write tarascon, and may be (may be) suggest to visit all my country when will you arrive in bordeaux? ;-)
Hmmm...this is a lot to think about! Thanks everyone! I'm trying to decide whether to stay in Avignon or Arles. I'm leaning towards Arles, but I'm having trouble finding hotels for under 50euro/night. Does anyone know of good places in Arles?
