Travelling from Carmel to San Francisco

Hi, we are travelling in California and will be dropped off at Carmel around mid-day. Can you tell me how we can travel from there to San Francisco on the same day? Are there buses, trains? Would an organised tour take us just for the return journey? Help!

I'd rent a car. That way you can stop at the Monterey Aquarium, or see the giant redwoods with a slight detour along highway 9.
Also, for two or more people, a car may well be the cheapest.
