We are travelling to Lake Garda (Sirmione) on 25th March and would be very grateful if anyone can tell us the best way to get there via public transport.

We gather there are a couple of train stations in Verona, Porta Nuova and Villafranca di Verona and trains go to Desenzano del Garda where you can get a ferry to Sirmione but

1. How do you get to Verona from Verona airport?

2 Which of the two stations do we need to go to for a train to Desenzano del Garda?

3. Is it possible to go straight from Verona airport to Lake Garda by public transport?

We also think there are buses but could only find two listed on the website - both going before 7am in the morning. Does anyone know if there are more buses than this and the address of the bus station in Verona?

All help will be gratefully received.

Villafranca is another town... You have to go to Porta Nuova Station... that's in Verona.
Very easy: shuttle bus from the airport
(http://www.aeroportoverona.it/eng/homepage_eng.htm and then "coonections") every 20 min, max 15 min ride.
The shuttle arrives just in front of the main train station. From there you can catch the train.
The Verona bus company also starts from there, but i cannot find a direct line to Sirmione (the reason is that, for a few Km, Sirmione is out of the Verona province.. It's in the Brescia one..)
From Desenzano you will find easily, i guess.
I found, right now, the timetable of the Brescia Trasports company, wit a line Brescia-Verona via Sirmione..

Check that you are going to Verona airport and not the Ryannair version which is outside Brescia (montechiari), if it is that one the taxi fare would be about £35. We stayed in Desenzano for our honeymoon and loved Sirmione, we walked there one day (long walk), the Desenzano station is about a mile from the lake and I would advise a taxi from that station to Sirmione, it would be far easier and probably not much more expensive than a taxi to the lake and then the boat (assuming you have luggage and don't want to cart it around.

You will have a lovely holiday though.

Hi and thanks for the helpful posts. We had a wonderful time despite the weather being absolutely freezing. We were staying in the Colombares area of Sirmione and the bus to Verona actually runs a few minutes from where we were staying. We ate at Ditta Antica Contrada and would recommend the Lake Garda fish filett with leek sauce and also the steaks. The wine is also really excellent.

We are also planning to make a similar trip to Sirmione, and accordingly, asking the same question: "Based on your experience, which type of a transportation would you recommend as for our trip from Verona to Sirmione?"

Did you make that train journey to Desenzano and then a taxi to Sirmione or a direct bus from Verona to Sirmione, etc.? Hoe much did it cost? How did you find it?

We are going to stay at the Mirabello hotel (Colombare, Via XXV Aprile, 100 - 25019 Sirmione).

I'd appreciate any help as for our trip. Thanks!
