I met alot of people when I was in St. Thomas. From what they told me, it's very hard to find work there. There are some jobs available in retail stores, restaurants, bars and tourist attractions. If that works for you, then go for it. Some of the people I met stayed at the Miller Manor in Charlotte Amalie, where I stayed. It is a sort of B&B/guest house. They have several rooms, and I believe they rent them out for long stays, because the people we met had been there for at least a month. The couple that owns it is wonderful! They can give you alot of good tips. It is in the seedier area of town in the Savon District, but if you're careful and don't wander around at night, you'll be fine. If your'e interested, I'll send you the exact address and phone number.

When are you moving? i'm looking into moving there this summer myself and really haven't found much helpful information. I'm currently a teacher and I'm not sure I really want to teach anymore and try something else. If you find out some valuable things could you please contact me? It would very appreciated.

If you go to www.vinow.com there is a whole section about moving here, as well as message boards. There is even a posting about teaching here. And yes, it IS a "different world" here...that's the reason people visit here...because it's not "there", where ever that may be. The culture is different and if you don't try to adapt, you may find yourself moving back sooner than you had expected. I liken it to Paris. We in the States always hear about how "rude" the Parisians are...but, to the Parisians, it is normal. The culture there is different and you shouldn't expect it to be like home. Just try to fit in...remember, YOU are the visitor.

you must work for the tourism board.

it is a different world and there is a lot more there than sunshine and sailboats and people need to be aware of that fact.
people leave sooner than expected because it is not what they expected. I was only going to stay for two I was there for threebefor decieding it was tome for me to go
also My roomate for a year and freind for many years was a school teacher on St Thomas for seven years I think I know what I'm talking about when it come to the school system.

To the new teacher with May 2005 certification:

What info were you able to find out? I am really curious about this things people are posting. I would appreciate all your help? My daughter is going to school for nursing and I am almost finished with my BA and we would like to move there. Isn't there always a need for a nurse and a teacher?
