Hi bpacker,

Ummm, don't know what that previous answer was all about. Anyway, travel in Korea is very cheap compared to many countries, and I've never bothered with a hostel. You can easily find a yeogwan (like a motel) for about 25,000 won a night. That was a good option for me, since I usually travel with my boyfriend, so we split the cost and have a private room.

Accomodations in Korea are generally pretty basic but decent, so if you're trying to save some money, I'd expect a hostel would be a comfortable and convenient choice. And the buildings look far more modern and well-kept than many of the yeogwans. Sorry I couldn't provide any more specific information.
You can check out http://www.kyha.or.kr/ if you haven't already.

Hi there,

Yes, I've tried staying in yeogwan the last time I was there. It's pretty good. Was also wondering if there are many visitors in Korea in spring? If so, I might need to book some hostels in advance...

Cheers and thanks,
B

Hello again,

It has been my experience that you only need to book during peak travel times in Korea, such as Korean holidays. Koreans don't have much time off to travel through the year, and there are pretty much never enough international tourists to book up an entire place. It might be different for hostels, but with just one exception (the most popular one-week summer vacation period among employers, at Naksan Beach), I've always been able to walk into a yeogwan and grab a room without any problems, even in Jeju.

Unless it is a major holiday weekend, you should be able to get a spot at the hostel in Gyeongju without a reservation. But it's always safer to reserve if you're sure of your dates! I don't want to be respponsible for you not having a place to sleep. ;-)

The whole booking thing is kinda strange in Korea. I've found that Koreans tend not to book ahead . So when you do try, you get some really weird looks. Or you turn up and they have no idea about your booking.
Just turning up before 2pm is good.

There are a couple of backpacker hostels in Seoul, and I heard about one in Gyeonju. Not sure of the price. Anyway there are heaps(!) of Yogwans in Gyeonju around the Bus Terminal. The info booth infront of the terminal may be able to help.

Gyeonju is great - you'll love it.

Hi MountainPoet,

Hey, thanks for the tip! I know exactly what you mean . had that kind of strange encounter - the funny look thingy - with a motel owner in Ulsan the last time. And this was after I booked a room and paid in advance....
Will check out the motels near the bus terminals, as you say .

Cheers,
B
