Has anyone ever visited Panevezys in Lithuania? I am looking for a decent hotel in order to spend a few days there. My grandparents or one of them had some connection, were possibly born there and I would like to go there.

I'm sorry, I've never had the chance to visit Panevezys, though I have read in the guide books that, although there are no obvious tourist sites, it is a pleasant town. There is also a website www.panevezys.lt.

It will not be difficult to drive to Panevezys from Vilnius. You can go by way of the Vilnius to Klaipeda motorway to Kaunas, and then from Kaunas to Panevezys via the Via Baltica, both of which are Western-Style motorways [no dirt tracks in sight!]. This way, you will also be able to take in the sites of Vilnius and Kaunas, both of which are lovely cities with large Old Towns, nice churches and museums etc.

Unfortunately the only hotel in the center of Panevezys is the Soviet era Hotel Panevezys, which should be an 'experience'. There is also another hotel over the river from the centre called 'Olimpas'.

I hope this information is useful for you.

Jacob.

Jacob, thank you for replying. I would not be driving I would be relying on public transport, i.e. coach or train. Do you have any knowledge of the public transport system between Vilnius and Panevezys? I will check out the Hotel Olimpus if possible.

Your best bet is buses. Lots of buses run from Vilnius to Kaunas. From Kaunas to Klaipeda you might be able to take a Eurolines bus to Ryga which will presumably stop en route at Panevezys. Check out www.eurolines.lt. There is also the website www.transport.lt. I'm not much help on this, I've only travelled by car in Lithuania.

I wonder if you had considered using Kaunas as an accomodation base? There's a much greater choice of Hotels.

A further thing you might like to consider is looking on www.balticholidays.com. They organise trips in which you can discover your family roots. They have local guides who will search through the records and do translations, and possibly drive you as well. It's definitely worth considering, I gather many people have met long lost relatives on these trips.

I hope this information is useful to you.

hi.ok there are at least three (two of them brand new)hotels.
all of them are pretty much in the very centre( having in ming how 'big' it is..
they are called 'romantica' 'smelyne' & ' panevezys'.
two first will be more expensive .. in mot too sure but i think they about 4-5 stars..
if you need something much more cheeper you could try youth hotel(which is normaly used my sport teams ) in the 'topoliu aleja'.
hope it will help.. you might find some more info in my panevezys page ..

Hi,

I hope it's not too late for good advices :)
You can go by bus straight from Vilnius to Panevezys, there's very good quality highway. By car you can drive there within 1,5 hour, by bus - 3 hours. Best hotel in Panevezys is 'Romantika', but it's 4 star hotel, not cheap. 'Smelyne' is also good. Have good time travelling :)

hi!

I agree, that Your best choise is take a bus from Vilnius to Panevezys. It cost You about 20 litas to one side and took's about 2,5 hour. Yes, there is a very nice hotel - "Romantic", near very nice Panevezys place - SENVAGE, but it's expensive.. I don't suggest you to stay in hotel "PANEVEZYS"...
By the way, you could know more about Panevezys in tourism information centre site : http://www.panevezystic.lt/index.php?lang=en, unfortunately you'll find there only contacts and something more about Panevezys town (site is not ready yet), better way is to go there:)

Have a nice days in Panevezys;)
