Fowey public transport?
Posted: Sun March 14, 2004 08:10 PM UTC
Hello,

I'm going to be stopping by Fowey a few weeks from now, on a backpacking trip. I was wondering if anyone knew what the local transportation situation is. My next solid destination is Marazion, which is fairly distant. Is there a service in town to get to St Austell, where I could catch a bus to Penzance near Marazion? Or is there a service that would take me directly there? Didn't see anything for a straight trip on National Express, etc. More interested in the Fowey-St Austell situation, because I know a service runs from there.

Also, any must-see places around Fowey to add to my list? Very interested in castles, standing stones, ancient legends, etc.

Thanks!
Ken

Whilst in Cornwall, you must visit the wonderful Eden Project at St Blazey near St Austell. It is possible to get there on public transport www.edenproject.com

Have a wonderful trip, Cornwall is Beautiful

Hi Ken:-)
Sounds like a great trip you are planning here in our area.
OK lets see if we can help, at least with the transport situation. First off, National Express are unlikely to be of much help in rural Cornwall as they are more a National company leaving the small town areas to smaller companies and also smaller vehicles.......have you ever been down a Cornish lane??? lol. Anyway, I have found this link for you

I hope it is of some help. I am not a great authority on Cornwall, for that your best bet is VT member Geoff_Wright, tell him I sent you! As I said, I dont know Cornwall that well, but I do know that the area west of St Ives is a very special, mystical area, as of course is Tintagel. Please dont hesitate to ask us if we can help any other way. We are in North Devon and if you are planning on coming to this area at all, let us know and we will supply coffee!

you will have to catch the local bus from Fowey thro Par into St Austell it runs Quite regular from the top of the hill at Windmill by the school, it will take you into the main bus/trail station at St Austell where you will be able to link to Penzance, the bus to Penzance is not very regular and are at present on the winter schedule so you would be better getting the train.
You can also take water taxis in and around Fowey and there are ferries across to Polruan and around to Mevagissey (summer) Fowey is V quiet at this time of year so do not expect too many places to be fully open!

just a few corrections on barnards comments, for "stream" I think he means the River Fowey, Lostwithiel is spelt like this and in Lostwithiel you will find Restormel castle, and you can catch a rather irregular bus service there, not like the services he gets in Londin, spot the typing error
