Hi. As far as I can tell Lachlan, the place, is a small town 50 or so K's by road - via New Norfolk - north-west of Hobart. It would be beautifully situated in mountainous country which no doubt would be great for bushwalking. That would be the main activity I would think. It is lovely country looking west to the South West National Park, on the edge of the Wellington Range.
Lachlan the man - Lachlan Macquarie - is considered to be "The Father of Australia". He was one of the early Governers of the whole Colony, from 1810 to 1821. He was a Scot and his work was outstanding. Read his life story if you can. A great many things around Australia bearing the name Macquarie, or Lachlan, are a tribute to him....L.

Further re Lachlan. I think that that particular town is named after his son of the same name. ...L.
