San Diengo Tips Please...

1. Where to stay? Downtown San Diego or along the coast?

2. Which attractions would you recommend for only 2 days short visit? Any other attractions I should not miss besides these big four? San Diego Zoo, the Wild Animal Park, SeaWorld San Diego and Lego Land.

Hi,

It all depends on what your budget will be, that way one can determine where the best place to stay will be...since you'll only be here for 2 days, would recommend the Wild Animal Park, Tijuana, Balboa Park and the Gaslamp Quarter.

Sincerely,

Spartan

Budget is not a concern here, but looking for something more casual / young travel style, not those luxury hotels.

BTW, will be there around Apr1-7. Is it good time to visit the beach? Possible to get sun tan / swim at this month?

Hi Vigi,

Try this hotel...La Pensione (located in the downtown neighborhood of San Diego known as "Little Italy," La Pensione hotel is surrounded by award winning restaurants and cafes and is within easy walking distance of all downtown and harbor activities). One can easily commute to all of San Diego on the trolley, which stops only two short blocks away. Driving time to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Sea World, and the San Diego airport or Convention Center is only about five minutes.

“A hotel with European charm at an affordable rate,” an appeal that keeps guest coming back. The website is http://www.lapensionehotel.com.

unless your traveling with small children (under 12), you can bypass legoland. The Zoo and/or the Wild Animal Park with take up the majority of one day. I'd do the beach and old town on one day as well.
Enjoy

1) Avoid downtown if you can. Decent hotels can be found at 'Hotel Circle', a loop just west of the intersection of I8 and HWY163.
Along the coast is nice, but it can get pricey.

2)That is a lot for 2 days. I'd skip Lego Land; it's a tourist trap.
Of the other three, I'd make the SD zoo my top priority; it is one of the best in the world.
See the beach ( somplace north of I8 ) if you can.

So... sounds like the coast is better choice.

Since I don't dirve, I will need to take public transport. Is it wise to stay near the coast or more convinent to stay down town?

Well... I know Legoland is not for my age, but I must go... for some reason... must squeeze in the big 4.

Any other suggestions BESIDES the big 4?

I would recommend staying as close as possible to the historic gaslamp district. It's an amazing place and everything's within walking distance - the restaurants and shopping.

My favorite of the 4 you listed is SeaWorld. The Wild Animal Park comes next. If there's only 2 places you can visit, I'd do these!

I have stayed at numerous places on my visits to San Diego, but the ones where I stayed close to the gaslamp dist were the most memorable.

Coronado is another choice - great opps for sailing and wind surfing there..

La Holla would be another choice if you are more interested in the beach scene - that's totally another culture, and doesnt look like you have much time on this visit!

happy travels!

I have been to San Diego many times and would highly recommend riding on the Old Town San Diego Trolley TourBus, not to be confused with the San Diego Trolley. This is actually a national tour bus company that provides tours in the "old town" areas of many US cities. (You can pick up a brochure in the hotel lobbies). After having been in SD at least 20 times we took this tour bus, and it was FANTASTIC. You can board at several locations, ride it all day long, 9-5, and get off at every stop or just the ones that interest you and it's only approx. $20. It takes you to Old Town, Balboa Park, Coronado, Gaslamp, and many more stops.

SF is around 5.5 hours further north.

San Diego & LA only 2 hours!!! So close.
So... do you think it is possible for me to stay in San Diego and have day trip visits to LA? Trying to save cost, since I may have free accomodation in San Diego.

Yeah, that would be a possiblity. You would have to go very early or somewhat late in the morning. The traffic between 7am and 9.30 am on I-5N can be nasty.

Hi Vigi ,
Hotel del Coronado would be a good place to stay , its on the beach and not faraway from Downtown and it is a site in its own. Regarding sun tan it possible to get it in April, but it is a bit too cold for swimming, maybe wearing wet suit.

I agree with previous post that Legoland suck like an airplane toilet and if you are here for only 2 days i would probably choose just one, either Zoo or Wild animal park. I am not sure that it is possible to get to Wild animal Park by public transportation; and if it is, it can take you a few hours just to get there.

suggestion for 2 days in San Diego:
Day 1
Morning : Coronado beach
Afternoon : Zoo
Evening: Parting in Gas Lamp Quarter with VT friends

Day 2
Morning : Scuba Diving trip to Kelp forest & Yukon destroyer ( you are a diver, aren't you?)
Afternoon: Sea-World
Evening : Dining and walk in La Jolla

By the way: public transportation is almost nonexistent here, but if you know how to drive i have an extra cars that nobody drives and you are welcome to borrow it.

But of course Yubert , although I didn’t think you needed one. Did you buy that Hammer that you wanted?
IRS last year aloud 100% depreciation for anything above 6k pounds, won’t see those specials if Kerry comes to power. And yes you have a choice of LX400 or any other you want? What can I say; I am just a nice guy. :) :)
Oh Jen, and if you are coming I might let you ride in my new X5. :)

He does have a nice set of Craftsman tools though, hammer included ..
