Shopping - clothes for matcrazy0 :-)
Posted: Wed February 25, 2004 03:50 PM UTC
My wife - matcrazy0 - is going to do some shopping in Berlin on Saturday. She is interested in casual (or maybe a little more up) clothes at medium or low (I hope :-) prices; a little but not too much strange, a little artistic... excuse me, I hope you understand what I mean. I can't explain it exactly in English. I am a guy :-)

Her questions:
- are the second hand shops worth of visit, where to find them, any specific recommendations?
- what about factory outlet centers?
- the same question to departmet stores or... anything else?
Is there anything interesting open after 4pm on Sat and on Sun morning?

Greetings,
Two matcrazies going to Berlin on weekend :-)

Sorry, matcrazy0 can't speak English enough (yet!) to ask questions in the forum.

Hi there, both Matcrazies!

I live in Kreuzberg and the beautiful young things come here for retro design and wacky originals.... lots of shops in and around Bergmanstr. (U-Bahn Mehringdam or Gneiesenstr). I also read recently that Mitte is the place for real designer outlets, and they're not always so expensive either apparently.

I'd do the little places on Saturday mornings and then leave the 4 - 8 pm slot for Ku'damm and Friederichstr. On Sunday your choice is more limited, but there are many flea markets (covered in the Berlin pages on this site).

Happy shopping!

Gillian

Hello Gillian,
Thanks a lot for advices and good wishes.
The problem is that we need a week in Berlin not just 1.5 day :-).

hi

shops in berlin are open saturday until 6 or 8 (depending on the shop). on sunday all shops (apart from tourist ones) are closed.

bergmannstrasse in kreuzberg, bleibtreustrasse/savignyplatz (off kudamm) and the area around winterfeldtplatz in schöneberg have some fancy independent designer shops.

there used to be germany's biggest 2nd hand shop at nollendorfplatz. It's called "garage", don't know if it's still there.

however, i wouldn't waste my time shopping if i had just a weekend in berlin.

hope this helps

Me either :-))). Btw if we like in Berlin we will re-visit it in better time/weather in spring or summer. We are going to see masterpieces from Museum of Modern Art in New York City on exhibition in Berlin since last Friday.

Greetings.

Hello Matt, I agree to all what's mentioned above from our VT-friends.... Bleibtreustrasse and Bergmannstrasse in Kreuzberg isn't that bad and there are indeed a lot of flea markets. For more info...have a look at the advices of the city-magazines "TIP" and "ZITTY"....on the other hand for really cute and grazy stuff I'd say London's Camden Town is probably the better address....and hey Matt, don't forget the bars and nightlife in Berlin..... ;o)) I'd say buy a t-shirt less and have a drink more... Cheers! Enjoy, Dimi

Hello Dimi,
I think over going to Yorckschlösschen Club in Kreuzberger as we both like jazz/blues, great German beer (+ wine) and meet some natives as well.
Do you know the place? Is it good address?
Cheers,
Matcrazies :-)

Yeah Matt, Yorckschloesschen is THE bar and club for
Blues, Jazz Blues, Deltablues, Rythm'n Blues and so on in Berlin. Established over 100 years ago and still honest and straight. There are life bands every Sat., Sun. and Wen. ... Have a look at my Berlin nightlife pages if you want to.... you can find there also the hompage of YS. Another good address for Blues etc. is the Harlem in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg which is run by a native from "Bluesland"..... Enjoy ! Dimi

Hi Matt,

go to Kreuzberg!

Around Bergmannstrasse (U Gneisenaustrasse or U Platz der Luftbrücke) a lot of crazy shops.

If your wife is looking for exquisit - but not so expensive - cloths visit Bleibtreustrasse. There are two second hand shops with desing fashion. I'm sorry I don't know the number of the house. But it is between Ku'damm and Sanvignyplatz.

The most shops are open in Berlin until 8 pm on SAT - but on SON everything is closed :-( (you are in Germany)

But you can take a Brunch at SUN morning in a lot of Coffeshops and small bars. Or you go to "Fruehschoppen" at 2 pm to Yorckschloesschen - it is really great - it is also in Kreuzberg (visit my Berlin Tips and you'll find the adress :-))

An other district for shopping in "Mitte" or "Prenzlauer Berg" but my favourite district in Berlin is Kreuzberg.

Have a nice weekend
Karin

hi matcrazy!!!!

kreuzberg is great and the areas mentioned above have tons of second hand stores. bleibtreustr is more schicki chic and expensive in charlottenberg...

you should also check out the alte schönhäuser allee in mitte near the weinmeisterstr u 9. there are a lot of independent designers and a good designer clothing outlet store on that street... i forget the name, but one street has great finds in italian designer fashion for only 20 or 30 eur per piece.

there are also some nice shops along kastanienallee in prenzlauer berg...

bergmannstrasse (U gneisenau) is great for shopping, you'll find some nice pubs ("kneipen" there as well. for second-hand clothes I prefer the area around Goltzstrasse in Schöneberg (between U-bahn Kleistpark and Winterfeldplatz).
most small shops, except in tourist areas, close not later than 4 pm on saturdays, the department stores and supermarkets are mostly open till 8 pm.
the MoMa-exhibition (mueum of modern art) is DEFINITLY worth a visit.
wishing you lots of fun in berlin
christina
