MoMA in Berlin - looong lines?
Posted: Mon February 23, 2004 08:21 PM UTC
I am going to pay short visit to Berlin on weekend 27-29 Feb. or more exactly to arrive Fri late evening and leave Sunday around midday (by car). And I would like to see masterpieces from the Museum of Modern Art, New York on exhibition which takes place in Neue Nationalgalerie since last Friday.

My Qs:
Should I expect to stay in very looong line to get the ticket (like to Eiffel Tower or Louvre in Paris for example)? How long? Eventually where to visit the gallery to avoid crowds (hmm... on Sat/Sun morning) ?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Greetings :-)))

I haven't been yet, but I heard that waiting is up to two hours. So, I guess, the best is to get in line like half or even an hour before the exhibition opens. That way you don't have tons of people in front of the paintings.

OR: you get the VIP ticket for a "bargain" of EURO 27,- (instead EURO 12,-). These tickets give you permission to enter through a separate entrance. As far as I know they are sold at big hotels. That way you don't end up spending your weekend in line!

Hi chirimoya,
Thanks for good (although expensive :-) suggestion. I have another idea: the tickets are available at Tourist Information Centers as well.
But I don't know:
Are the tickets sold for exact day (and hour) of entrance? (I guess they can't allow all the people to come inside at one time) Or they just sell as many tickets as people can enter at that time = slow sale?

Greetings,
Matt.

I just checked and the VIP-tickets are in fact for a certain day and time of day!
You can purchase them here:
MoMA-Shop
im InterContinental Berlin
Budapester Str. 2
10787 Berlin
Tel.: 030-2602 2222
Fax: 030-2693 1884
eMail: moma@interklassik.de
open from Tue-Sun: 10:00-18:00

But as I said before: get there early, bring along some coffee and wait in line. I just think that 27 Euros is way over-priced.

Hi! I was at the exhibition on Thursday but decided against the long queue which would have taken me two hours before I got in to the exhibition. This was at 3pm in the afternoon but I think the exhibition is open until 10pm some nights. I am sure it will be worth waiting for and it will be continuing for some months.

Haha, finally I visited MoMA last Sunday - REAL PARADISE for art lovers. We bought a book - catalogue of the exposition, hmm... available in German only but with a lot of pictures inside. It costed 39 euros (hard cover, soft one was cheaper).

I bought a ticket in a ticket office located in small house - box office put on a street in front of Neue Nationalgalerie building. No lines there. 12 euros for weekend ticket per person. No dates signed on the ticket though, just price - I think they were valid till the end of exposition = September 2004.
To get inside we were waiting in loong line almost 50 min. on Sunday midday, on Sat 5pm the line was a little bit shorter but we didn't have enough time on Sat to enjoy the exposition.

Thank you very much for all suggestions and advices.
Greetings.
