Venice in October
Posted: Sun February 22, 2004 08:31 PM UTC
We will visit Venice for six days during the first week in October. Does anyone have any advice regarding the weather or special events at that time. I've been to Venice twice before during the summer, seen the big stuff and am now hoping for a more casual different experiance.

Any suggestions also about local artisans or craftsmen other than glass makers. Thanks, Tom

I have heard of a wood sculpter who creates the most fabulous designs of unusual objects. Unusal in that you wouldn't expect to see them made of wood. He has made everything from shoes and suits to a full size sports car that can be seen sailing through the canals !

from frommers website

A unique outlet in Venice is Livio de Marchi, San Samuele, San Marco 3157 (tel. 041-5285694). De Marchi and his staff can take almost any item, from cowboy boots to a Vespa to a woman's handbag, and sculpt it in wood in hyper-real detail. Even if you don't buy anything, just stop in to take a look at these stunning items sculpted from wood.

Well, there are not special events in that period. But it's quite a good time to visit Venice, because there is not so much tourism as in summer or in Carnival's Time.
About the weather: I don't know, it's not easy to understand the weather in Venice. For example, in this time there are a lot of rains, strange for february...
In October you will find probably the high-water, expecially in San Marco's Square and near it (it's the first place that goes under water), but no problems, there are wooden walk passages for this incovenient.... and btw, I think you like it as most of travellers :)

If you are interested in water glass, I think you shouldn't miss to go to Murano, which is really important for this and where you can see workers making glasses. Lot of shops are here, as in Venice indeed. Bye :)
