Hotel Accomodations
Posted: Sun February 22, 2004 02:58 AM UTC
Hi everyone,
My boyfriend and I are visiting Rome during the first week of April. We have not booked any hotels yet since we are unsure what areas are safe. Does anyone have any suggestions for a safe yet inexpensive area in Rome? And any opinions on the bed and breakfasts? We saw some online, but are not sure how far they are from town..since they were rather cheap.
Thank you for you help.

Yes, a moderate priced hotel is the hotel Napolean. I usually stay at a deluxe hotel but, Rome is quite expensive and was just visiting there to travel onward to Greece. So, I took a chance and booked at this 3 to 4 star (Italian rated- by Govt.) hotel and was impressed. The staff speaks several languages, it has a nice lounge next to a very good restaurant on the second level, lots of sitting areas, close to Metro (subway)- by far the best feature (Just about 20 steps out the hotel door and into a subway entrance/station-I am not sure how you plan to get around), they arrange tours (I went to the Vatican/other tour), and lastly very close to the train station about 3 blocks or 1 subway stop away (This might be crucial if you take the train from the airport as I did, since it is about 20 to 30 miles away). Almost everywhere is safe in Rome (Even by the train station-there late night places to get pizza etc,-just use a litlle caution). Not sure about the B&B, but try to find the Govt. star rating this is fairly accurate as to what you will get. (The Govt. set strict standards in this area and inspect each property and then designate a star rating from 1 to 5). I found this hotel on Yahoo travel, then booked directly with the hotel to save the booking fee. The only downside are somewhat european (small) and older furnishings- but very comfortable and clean. (Always ask for air conditioning when you book-again a european thing). Good luck. (And be sure to go to Spanish steps area (Piazza Spana) and get some roasted chestnuts from one of the street vendors- very good.)

How much are you looking to spend and how long will you be in Rome and what do you want to do while you are there?

I have stayed in two hotels in Rome and found this one to be nice:

Mario at the front desk was absolutely outstanding and the location was very good.

But there are TONS of good hotels in Rome.

My suggestion is to consider what you want to do, and locate yourself close to it...

Hi,

My fiancee and i stayed in Rome just a few weeks ago. We did not know where to stay either, but our eventual choice, the Hotel Daniela was excellent. Not to expensive, and very close to everything. The details about it are in my travel pages, as well as some places to eat around it.

The area around has some graffiti, but we had no reason to feel unsafe. We were out walking the streets late at night going for coffee and never saw any sign of trouble.

The hotel Daniela is a 10 minute walk from the Coliseum and the Roman Forums. It is also only a 2 minute walk from Metro Line A, which takes you straight to the Vatican.

I have never stayed anywhere else in Rome, so do not know how it compares to other hotels/B&B's, but i would quite happily go back there should i ever have the chance to visit Rome again.

Hi,

I will be in Rome at the same time and as you know it is Easter time. I would suggest you book something/anything to make sure you have a place. The price of high quality hotels is outrageous. The lower priced places seem to be around Termini station though I have read that the area there is not so great (though most people have no problems). I decided to find a lower quality hotel more centrally located and decided on Hotel Lugano. I read some reviews and of course like anyplace it has some mixed reviews. But it is located in Via del Tritone, in the city center, close to Via Veneto and Villa Borghese, and between the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps with via Condotti and its famous boutiques, the Quirinale and the Parliament. With only 3 days in Rome before we head to Florence and Venice I hope to spend little time in the hotel other than sleeping and showering. Let me know what you decide!

Check out the Hotel Della Musa on Via Tomaso Salvini. This is in a nice residential area. Hop the bus and you will drive right by the Colliseum.

We stayed at the Springhouse up by the Vatican and were very happy. It was easily accesible via the metro and they had bicycles that we could borrow. It is in a residential neighborhood. Most people would rather be closer to "the action" but we enjoyed seeing a less hectic side of Rome. And of course just a short metro ride to anything.

The hotels around Termini are usually the cheapest because there isn't much going on there. But the location is good because buses and the two subway lines leave from termini and thus you can easily get about the city. The area around Termini is fine in terms of safety, but i suppose how safe you feel depends on the sort of city/town you come from. Compared to New York, Los Angeles and London, all of Rome is safe by comparison. But if you have enough money, I would stay near the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, or Campo dei Fiori. Anywhere near there is definitely in the center of everything. But really, Termini is not too far from the main spots on foot (if you are motivated to walk everywhere for some reason) and is close to public transportation.
