I now of a catamaran sail cruse that takes you from the Peruvian side to the Bolivian side for about $150-200 USD. I'm not sure if they offer solo-sailing cruises. I don't have their number off hand, but I know there's an advertizement on Footprint South America Handbook 2002. Let me know if you're interested and i'll look it up for you at home(i'm in the office now).

Check with South American Explorers http://www.samexplo.org/. They have club houses in Lima and Cusco. I got a lot of info from them before and during my Peru trip. I took a boat trip out to two islands in Lake Titicacca, with an overnight stay with a local family, and a hike on the other island - all for $8. Quite a beautiful place.

Definitly recommend the tour Dave recommends, even if you only do the one day tour to Taquile and the Uros Floating islands. have fun, Fernando

Don't know anything about the sailing boats. I made the trip from Bolvia to Peru on a steamer build in 1912; great trip. See: http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/2f01c/886/9/#T

How do you organize a homestay on lake titicaca?
I have about 4 days to make it from cusco to la paz and would like to spend 1 or 2 night with a home stay on lake titcaca - is this something I should organize in advance or is this something that one can organize once in the area? Is there any homestays that are recommended? Thanks

Jeez, reading the original post is like reading a passage from time itself.. it's been a while since I went on that trip, but i'm positive you will find dozens of different companies offering you a homestay in the islands.. the prices are quite reasonable so do shop around for the best deal.. the usual tour takes 2 days, overnight in one of the islands and visiting another two on the other day. There are also day tours as well.
have fun,. Fernando
