Similar towns to boulder out there?
Posted: Sat February 18, 2012 05:49 PM UTC
Hi All,
I was in the USA last summer and spent a few days in Boulder Colorado.
I absolutely loved it there. I am heading back to the US this summer and I was hoping somebody could reccomend a similiar town thats not too big, has great things to do outdoors and also has good nightlife.

Thanks for your suggestions,
Cam

You don't say if you want to stay in Colorado. If so, maybe Colorado Springs. If you want to go farther west then Monterey or Carmel, or in mid country, Memphis

Also possibly Sante Fe, New Orleans, Austin, Las Vegas, or depending on the time of year, Anchorage

Park City, Utah or Seattle, WA would be my suggestions.

OK, Park City might not have night life, but it is a smaller town and has a lot of outdoor activities near by. That's 2 out of the 3 criteria. It has a similar feel to me like Boulder (which I think doesn't have much nightlife either).

A few that come to mind: Telluride CO - cozy town and great mountains. Lake Tahoe CA/NV - maybe I'm biased to my home, but its got a bit of everything. Moab UT - great access to the canyon lands. Sedona AZ - fun place and great hikes. Boise ID - often forgotten, but nice & access to places like Craters of the Moon. Jackson Hole WY - year round mountain sports. Portland or Bend OR - very outdoor oriented

I would not have thought of Boulder as a town. It is a city and has a population of over 900,000 people - NOT a small town. So taking Boulder as the standard, I tried to think of smaller compact cities with both nightlife and things to do during the day outdoors. Have to have both. Not just outdoor activities.

Boulder with 900,000 people? That's somewhat of a 2050 dystopian scenario.

I know what's being requested, but I don't know that there's really anything out there exactly. A lot of what's being suggested is either much too large (Seattle, Portland) or much too small and wealthy (Park City, Moab, Jackson Hole). I spent roughly a month in Boulder a few years ago, and I don't know that there are a lot of places like it. The Colorado culture mixed with the wealthy but also college-aged populace make it a really unique environment.

The closest towns I can come up with are Flagstaff, Arizona, Bellingham, Washington and Missoula, Montana. Both are college towns, roughly the same size as Boulder, very safe, very open, and both with great outdoor opportunities.

Sorry - I'm a little dyslexic with numbers. I saw Boulder 97,385 in 2010 and I guess I added a zero.

Lawrence KS has the same college town vibe: student crowd, huge music and nightlife scene, micobrewery, downtown full of independent shops etc

Plus easy access to hiking in the outdoors and an hour's drive from Kansas City for big city shopping, eating etc

If you're going to go into the Midwest, then I gotta throw out my town: Bloomington, Indiana. College town, actual hills with actual hiking (although only for roughly 4 months in the year, the rest of the time it's just mud), extremely safe, very open and progressive, good bar and restaurant scene. The only problem is that it's in Indiana. ;)

I realize also I left out Asheville, North Carolina, which is just a little larger than Boulder but has a very similar vibe and culture of wealthy, outdoorsy people. I visit fairly often and used to live near there, and I think it would be easy to beam many of the people there straight into Boulder without them really noticing.
