Yes, as Santi said, two tickets. AVE Tickets are for a certain day, train and seat.
Mind that if you buy in advance at www.renfe.com you can save a 60% of the price.
The RENFE site is... huh.. a bit... 'temperamental'... but the savings are worth it. You can even travel in first class for a bit less you would pay for a tourist class ticket at the station.

Your post didn't indicate when you were traveling. You can buy tickets from Madrid to Barcelona on line at the Renfre site beginning sixty days before your trip for up to 60% of what you will pay at the station the day of the trip. Their site is somewhat complicated but if you can navigate it the savings are great! renfre.com

Kindly correction to the link provided by TooTallFinn24: its RENFE.com
As he said, well worth the effort, even the site is not the user-friendliest ever (to say something not ofensive about it ;-))
dreamybd: welcome to VT, but what has your answer to do with the question?

You are all so kind to take the time to respond to my question. Yes, I forgot to mention that we are going to tour Spain in June, 2012 and plan to take the train from Madrid to Barcelona during the last week of June into first week of July (2012).
Thank you so much!!

Re: AVE Train from Madrid to Barcelona Posted: Sat March 31, 2012 06:08 AM UTC
I am getting frustrated with renfe.com. It is not a user friendly site at all. I tried purchasing an AVE train ticket from Madrid-Barcelona-Madrid using a 60-day window but it says no trains are found. It does not even allow my user registration to go through. I have exhausted all tricks I learned from VT on purchasing a reasonably priced AVE train ticket in Spain but it does not work.
Does anyone know a better way to navigate renfe.com? Thank you in advance for your input.

Many American credit cards simply will not work because the bank that issues them may not have software that is compatible with the Renfe software. The Amex card and the Citibank card do not work. Many Americans have pulled their hair out in frustration trying to buy Renfe tickets on the web, without much luck. This writer has not had any luck using his American Visa credit card because when he puts in his credit card information on the Renfe website, the Renfe website brings him to his credit card's bank and when he enters the information his bank asks for, nothing happens and the transaction is not completed

I understand your frustration, but do not give up! Its worth it
In any case, today is Mar 31, I can see trains for May 31 but not for Jun 1... this is as expected as May 31 its two months from today.
In any case, when it says no trains are found, you can't do anything but wait they post the schedule for that date. Delays from the "60 days rule" may happen when they are updating their schedule and prices, it may happen when they update from summer to winter (or viceversa). In any case, its too early for booking a rain for June.
