Trani--need advice on safe parking
Posted: Tue February 14, 2012 10:04 PM UTC
I will be staying near Locorotondo, but I want to visit Trani, and I would appreciate any advice on driving into the city and parking safely. I am working out details of my trip, but I may want to stay overnight, and if so I would like the car to be safe. Are there garages? Reading about hotels is discouraging about the parking situation. I will have no luggage, so where I park the car is not so important. Close to the old town and Duomo would be nice, obviously, but I am open to any suggestions if I can find a safe space with relatively easy access. Thanks!

Hi Spencer,

I see that up to now no one answered your question. So I try, although I haven't been that far south in Italy.

Usually I find parking outside the town centres anywhere in the parts of Italy where I travel (Umbria, Marche, Emilia Romagna). To get an idea where these could be I always look at google maps first, in the satellite view and find out where many cars park.

When I do that in the case of Trani, I see a lot of parking cars near the duomo, if this is San Nicola Pellegrino at the seaside. Have a look:
http://maps.google.de/maps?q=41.28216,16.418181&hl=de&num=1&t=h&gl=de&z=18
When I enter "trani puglia parcheggio" and "trani puglia parking" into google, I also get several placemarks, among them is one next to the duomo and another one close to it, on Piazza Re Manfredi. It seems to be the one in that triangle left hand side of the duomo (marked as Castello Svevo in the google map).

Does that help at least a bit?

Ingrid

Thanks, Ingrid, for these very useful suggestions, and I now have no concerns about parking near the cattedrale if I decide on a day-trip only. A question still remains about the safety of the car if I decide to do an over-night stay. Perhaps I should decide on a hotel and see what the staff can suggest. From what I've read, the problems seem to arise when one tries to navigate the old town itself, not the outer edge where the cathedral lies. We'll see, but many, many thanks for your help. Spencer
