| Andalucía | What to do with ten days in Andalucia Posted: Tue February 14, 2012 04:54 PM UTC
We will be spending ten days in Andalucia in late March and are trying to get an idea of how to spend our time. One of us will be 7 months pregnant so we don't want to be anywhere too remote and are more interested in relaxing in a small number of places than a jam-packed itinerary.
We're flying in and out of Malaga and at the moment we're thinking of doing a circuit from Malaga to Granada to the Sierra Nevada to the coast and back to Malaga. We're hoping for some suggestions about beautiful places to stop off, villages/towns to stay in along the way, and especially for advice about nice places to stay along the coast east of Malaga. Also any suggestions about good guest houses/hotels around the €30-€40/night mark. Thanks! |

Hi - I am assuming you mean 30-40 euros per person per night?
I would suggest for places to stay east of Malaga Nerja - on the coast and in an attractive location, with lots of restaurants , cafes and bars and the famous caves - though I would not recommend that as suitable for the prefnant party member. I have had a quick look on booking.com and places appear to be booking up fast - it is the week before Easter. Some of the B&Bs are in fact more like boutique hotels, amd in my opinion over priced. Hostals (NOT hostels) often provide a very reasonable alternative wihin your budget. The one in Nerja that I am thinking of was very popular with one of our family - I think it was Hostal Miguel, or even Michael. A google search should help if no specific suggestions come in. We were usually self catering when staying in that area, apart from the occasional splash-out at the Parador in Nerja. There are more hostals in Malaga itself which may be too is is busy for you I don't have any up to date recommendations.

I remembered the name it was Miguel -
http://www.hostalmiguel.com/ If you travel back to the coast from Granada via the A4050 it is a bit of a switchback ridebut there are spectacular views. It brings you down north of Almunecarwhereyou have achoice of the coast road or the A7 motorway in the direction of Nerja and Malaga. If you can fit in a visit to Ronda it is worth the trip.

I felt rushed while in Granada even though it was 2 nights (but I got in from Madrid late, had the entire day to explore the Alhambra/Generalife, then the Cathedral, then left the next day on the mid day train to Sevilla. I would have liked to have had at least one extra day. Sevilla was three nights, but I also squeezed in a day trip to Cordoba. I would have liked to have had time to do a trip to Ronda. Since you are there in late March, check the timing for Santa semana, as it is a major holiday in Sevilla and places will be booked. Karl

Andalucia is huge, malaga is nice try the boquerones by the beach.fry small fish
Granada is nice, Sierra Nevada will be cold and may snow, in your condition dont think good idea ,just my opinion. this is the tourist board for all of Andalucia http://www.andalucia.org/en/ you can also hit andalucia in the destination window above and find tips by posters like us. For housing I have use www.homelidays.com there. you can go to Ronda, Mijas, Antequera, Jaen, are my favorites around Malaga

We did much the same circuit two years ago (ended up with an unexpected 4 nights in Malaga thanks to "the" volcano, and came home by bus!). The holiday was great to that point though. 3 Nights in Granada, and two in Nerja. I think the caves at Nerja should be OK so long the expectant one in the group is still reasonably mobile. It's no more difficult that some of the streets in Granada!
Just inland from Nerja is the village of Frigiliana, which is stunning. Well worth a visit. We were unsure how to pick a restaurant in Nerja - there are many so resorted to reviews. In the end we managed to find places close to the centre that did really excellent food - the best of the holiday, so I think it's worth checking recent reviews and you can really eat very well.

Trying to put oneself in your wife's position - both Malaga and Granada, whilst great with lots to see, can be a bit of a drag around - Alhambra, Alcazaba, Gibralfaro etc, she'll be dead on her feet! Nerja sounds a bit more relaxing, as you want, as would a village in the Alpujarra. Sounds a bit picky but as a poster said the Sierra Nevada is cold, it also faces north and you approach it from the north - out of your way. Whereas the Alpujarra to the south you get to off the main Granada-Motril highway, near Beznar and the Lecrin Valley toward Lanjaron, We stayed there once and it was great.
There used to be a nice big guest house in Villanueva de Algaidas to the north of Malaga too, on ownersdirect.co.uk. John Colley the chap was called, and we stayed in his villa nearby. Sounds more relaxing for 7 months pregnant!

Wow thanks all that's loads of good advice, I'll be checking out the links and maybe thinking twice about venturing into the high mountains.
And yes it seems places are getting booked up fast due to the Semana Santa festival, so we'll be making our Granada booking asap! Thanks again, Steve and Sophie
