We went to the touristy part at Badaling, turned left and kept climbing. Once you got past the touristy parts, we hit unrestored parts that were quite interesting.

We also went to Badaling and wandered off away from the touristy sections. The good thing about this - we went with a tour guide who basically left us alone for a couple of hours and we could wander around and see what we wnated to see. We were there in December and it was windy and very cold.

Do not go to Badaling. I would suggest that you go to Mutianyu instead. Less crowd and nicer view =)
