France to Italy drive
Posted: Tue February 14, 2012 04:10 AM UTC
Four of us are arriving at Marseille and driving to the Cortona Italy area (farmhouse). I would like to find a nice coastal village/town to stay in on the way from France. We will most likely stay in Lucca and visit Pisa on the way after coming in from the coast. Any suggestions on places and hotels or B&Bs?

beautiful drive indeed, done it to Milano. You should get your itinerary from www.viamichelin.com and they will help you trace your stops with hotel/resto recom along the way.
take the A50 along the coast directiono Toulon, then A57 to Canet des maures, to link up with the A8 you pass by Fréjus, Cannes, Nice, the works lovely ride ,but the area is huge. Need to narrow it down from a paper map. Michelin will do that too.
hope it helps your planning

You could pull into Portofino for a night.
Try the Hotel Eden.

Check out "Sestri Levante" and "Hotel Helvetia" an unspoiled town on the Bay of Silence. It is a beautiful spot. 1.5 hours from Lucca By train.

I would advice stopping in Lerici. It's relatively easy to access, and not too touristy. Hotel Doria offer rooms with spectacular sea views.
You could also take a quick boat trip to Portovenere and cinque terre from there.
If you haven't booked you accommodation in Cortona, take a look at http://www.italianview.com offering self-catering villas.

Lucca is a really good choice when visiting Pisa.
I am not sure of your exact route, but Vernazza might be a good place to look... then you can take the train down to Cinque Terre and back. Then continue on south going through Pisa and then to Lucca.
good luck, Dave

I use www.luccaholidayhomes.com or just google it. Good selection of properties and Deborah is great at communicating with you. Apartments to villas inside or out of Lucca Walls. Quick bus or train to Pisa from there.

Took me a while to get back to this, I think your info is helpful, will check it out. There seems to be a fork in the road between Lucca and Pisa, I'm not sure which place is the best I don't think we'll have time for both. Any suggestions?
