Best travel cards in Paris?? which one
Posted: Tue February 14, 2012 02:49 AM UTC
Can anyone help suggest the correct travel card to purchase - very confused. Will be in Paris for a week, 1 trip from CDG airport to Gare Du Nord on arrival
then several days exploring Paris central using metro system, and 3 day trips out of city. Not interested in visiting lots of museums, just the major ones (2 0r 3).
Checked out Paris Visite card, don't think it will work for us and others have mentioned buying '10 or 24 tickets' on arrival, can anyone explain what they are and how they are used.
Thanks

The 10 tickets you are referring to are called carnets, you purchase them in a pack at a discount and they are good for a single ride on the metro or bus. Two or more people can share a carnet as they are single tickets.

To get from CDG to central Paris you have several options but not the metro, we always take the RER train.

I have looked at passes in the past but I would never get a good value out of them as I enjoy walking and Paris is a fabulous city to walk in.

The Paris Museum Pass is just for sights, if you only plan on visiting a couple of museums, then it will not be a good bargain for you.

Sincere thanks, I think you have answered my question, we really enjoy walking, probably not worry about tickets.

We get a carnet of 10 Metro tickets that we share. 12.70 euros for ten tickets. We walk a lot so only use one or two (each) a day.

From CDG there are lots of travel options but the RER is easy and cheap. It's in a different transportation zone so you'll have to buy separate tickets to and from the airport. There is also good bus service. You can read the transportation options at http://www.aeroportsdeparis.fr/ADP/en-GB/Passagers/Access-maps-car-parks/Paris-CDG/Access/public-transport/public-transport.htm

The only Pass we've used consistently is the Paris Museum Pass and for just a couple of them, I'm not sure I'd do it. The Louvre is the place you will run into lines and you can avoid the lines by using any entrance EXCEPT the famous Pei Pyramid entrance. For some reason everyone seems to queue there. Here is the Louvre web site showing all the different entrances. http://www.louvre.fr/plan

I'm not sure what the "24 tickets" is. Haven't heard that before. BTW, if you want an inexpensive boat tour on the Seine, use the Batobus. It's a regular bus on a boat. There is no commentary but they do announce the stops so you know where you are. It's fun and a different perspective. We use it for transportation on at least one day on each trip. http://www.batobus.com/

Enjoy Paris.

When you get to the Gare du Nord, look for the little booth that sells the carnets for the Metro. It's close to where the entrance is to the Eurostar. It's easy to buy them there and then you are set. I took the RER into Paris several times one year as my husband was attending a conference held at the airport. It's about a 40 minute ride. It might be you can buy the carnets right there when you get the RER ticket.. I'm not sure but it's worth asking.

The RER from CDG to central Paris can either be an "express" or one that stops at several suburban stops along the way.
Get the "Express" one - much quicker.

When you get to the Gare du Nord go to the RELAY newpaper shop...ask the guy at the till and he will sell you the carnet of tickets..saves waiting ages in line at the machines and he will also sell you a small laminated underground map....very usefull

you have the official PARIS transport site above in English. You can browse and compare all options. The airport to gare du nord you need a RER B train, cost something like 8,7€ but changes happened so check the site. For in city of Paris travel, you can buy the carnet of 10 tickets ,something like 12,70€ again check prices.
For 3 museums the Paris museum card is an option to look at its costs;here is the official site in English http://en.parismuseumpass.com/

Very easy, and do walk as much as you can, better way to see the city above ground. Cheers

Excellent tip Kirsty, the lines at the Gare du Nord are horrible and the machines don't take American credit cards so I will be sure to look for that next time I'm in Paris :-)

I know Dabs and now I want EVERYONE to know...if you see my page on it I thought I had done all my research and we duly waited patiently in the line for the 2 working machines for quite a while...we even let a couple of obviously irate people go ahead of us ...but that turned out to be bad for the queue moral as a whole....then after we had finally got our 2 carnets of 10 Add says lets just see how much an underground map might cost and get a couple of bottles of water for in the hotel room overnight...so we trot off to the RELAY newpaper shop which is literally 50 yards from those machines to find the guy happily handing out tickests in ones, twos, fives, tens...however many you want..and a small foldable laminated map for a euro..

Its a tip to be shared for sure

yes Relays is one, and so many other merchant sell them too, its in the Ratp site too.
I know when visitors come time is of the essence so every little time save is precious. Locals know the ins and out, and we planned ahead. For example, I am going to Paris the 16 by TGV on business, and already have my metro tickets. Purchase them last time was in the city early in the month;so now I am prepare not to wait in lines.

the info is in French :où acheter un titre, or where to buy a ticket

<The RER from CDG to central Paris can either be an "express" or one that stops at several suburban stops along the way. Get the "Express" one - much quicker.> and safer as there are reports of bad guys from the outer suburbs robbing people on the non-express trains.
