You'll need to take the train from Budapest to Zagreb first. Leaves about 7 am and arrives 1pm. Zagreb's a pretty little city, spend the afternoon and evening there then catch a bus to wherever you decide to go. The Croatian bus system is excellent with comprehensive and frequent routes and timetabling - it will get you everywhere. Zadar would be a good choice - 3 hours by most direct bus route. You could head north and south from there on day excursions along the coast, visit the Plitvice Lakes, catch a ferry to an island.

Don't miss Split and Zadar, and id you have time go down until Dubrovnik!
There is also a train connection between Zagreb and Split.
You can travel by night.
The island are beautiful too.

Yes, Zadar definitely can be great place to begin with, and if you have few more extra days, you can have a trip to some of the islands near. I recommend Dugi otok with stunning cliffs and excellent beaches - if you plan to swim. Even if weather is not warm enough for swimming, cliffs are beautiful all time.
Distances along coastal towns are relatively small, but given the historic richness, it may take a lot of time for person to fully enjoy the place. Then there's landscape, from National Parks till nice cultivated areas with grapes, and lakes...
Anyhow, I suggest you have a look at http://croatia.hr/en-GB/Homepage because here we cannot cover as much as that country has, while that site has done pretty decent job (it's official site of tourist union of croatia, anyways).
