BARS ARE SHUTTING AT 10PM
Posted: Sat February 11, 2012 03:36 PM UTC
HI THERE,
MY WIFE AND I ARE DUE TO GO TO GOA NEXT WEEK FOR THREE WEEKS, I HAVE HEARD THAT FOR SOME STUPID REASON OF WHICH I AM NOT SURE, THE BARS ARE ALL SHUTTING AT 10PM, WHY IS THIS THE CASE, AND SURELY TO GOD THEY CAN NOT DO THIS AS I UNDERSTAND IT IS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE ELECTIONS, WELL I AM ENGLISH AND WILL NOT BE VOTING SO WHY SHOULD THIS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH ME OR IN FACT ANY OTHER PEOPLE OTHER THAN LOCALS. I ALSO HEAR THAT ALL IS SHUTTING, FOOD ETC, FOR A START OFF THE FOOTBALL BACK HOME WILL NOT FINISH BY 10PM, THERE WILL BE A LOT OF UNHAPPY PEOPLE INCLUDING MYSELF IF THEY TURN THE FOOTBALL OFF BEFORE IT FINISHES, THIS IS ACTUALLY THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD, IF THIS IS THE CASE I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK TO GOA AGAIN, AS THIS HAS COST ME A LOT OF MONEY, I WILL GO ELSEWHERE. I WAS RELAY LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING BUT THIS HAS PUT ME OFF SLIGHTLY. WHAT IF YOU WANT TO EAT AFTER 10PM. ??? I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING NEWS FROM ANYONE BEFORE I TRAVEL ON 18TH FEB. THANKS.

There's no need to shout! You are visiting a foreign country, so I would have thought that you would be prepared to abide by the laws/customs of that country, regardless of the fact that it may inconvenience you. Believe it or not, "football back home" is not the be all and end all of foreign travel and certainly is not uppermost in the minds of officials when planning elections and so on. Try and adapt. Wherever you go you are bound to find laws and customs which are not as you think they should be for your convenience.

Looks like the case. You can easily get around this by just eating before 10:00 and buying take-out alcohol for enjoying at your hotel after 10:00 - as we do when traveling to places where no alcohol is served. Stock up on snacks for the late-night munchies.

Elections can be volatile events in some countries, and I believe I read something about the ban helping to eliminate vote-buying in the bars in casinos. It is unfortunate but important local affairs do take precedence over leisure activities.

I am also going to Goa in three weeks time. It doesn't bother me at all that alcohol is only being served at specific times. It is not our country, so when in Rome, do as the Romans, in this case the Goans. I have travelled extensively, and I always abide by the customs of the country I am visiting. I respect their views, their way of life and their religion. Surely abstinance won't kill you !!

And why would you travel to another country and want to watch sport from the UK? I would take it for granted that English football is not all that important in Goa, just record it at home and watch it when you get back. You are going to visit an entirely different culture, if you want stuff you have at home then perhaps stay at home!

You should be greatful that they are only shutting at 10pm, other countries like Thailand etc...will stop selling beer for several days for an election to prevent trouble. and it's tough luck for us foreigners but we got to respect local customs.

Imagine a tourist from Goa travelling to the UK, spending a lot of money for the trip and stay and complaining about UK bars that are open after 10PM showing no Indian cricket games on the TV!

I think you would be laughing hard; so do we now.

You sound like Victor Meldrew !!! I DONT believe it !!
Why spend all that money to go to Goa if all you want is the beer, football and a bit of sunshine, buy a heat lamp and stay at home.

When we were in Marakesh we didn't have an alcoholic drink - not because we couldn't have- but because the locals didn't drink and what would have been the point sitting among tourists drinking. The fun of travelling is to experience something different, in your case an election in a tropical paradise which is renowned for its beaches and architecture; and you want to watch English football? According to information I found on Google it looks like the Goan Football season is still underway. You could try to attend a match there.

I am actually surprised that alcohol is being served at all. Election days (as well as many holidays) are usually completely "dry" days - for the full 24 hours. There are ways around this if you plan properly - just buy your booze in advance and bring it to your room. Hopefully you have a nice balcony from where you can enjoy your drinks. The bars at five star hotels are usually open to foreigners (bring your passport) even on dry days. In North Goa, that would be the two Taj Hotels in Sinquerim (just past Candolim). I realize that your booze will be much more expensive, but at least it's still available. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't find any food after 10 p.m. It's hardly likely you'll starve.

This is really a bad because you planing a trip and if there will be Restriction of timing for food and bars. But this is because of the Election. This is actually very good time to visit the Goa because the Goa is super-duper in this season. Do 1 thing go after the Election you may enjoy lotz. All the best. :-)

Excuse me? I don't think I abused you. In fact, I did quite a lot of work to see if this "rumor" (as you said you "heard" it) was correct or not so I could give you full details.

I will add that I read another piece about the government cracking down on those 5* hotel bars that have been sneaking under the radar where sales of alcohol are concerned. I hope you find one which hasn't yet been caught.

Well, excuse us please. I advise you to read your original post and see how you would react to a) being shouted at and b) the tone you have used. You sound exactly the sort of person I would walk around the block to avoid, whether on holiday or not. But good on you, you buy the Goans a beer, albeit a small one and watch football with them but you fail to understand how important elections are..... oh heck, why do I waste my time replying. It's like preaching to the converted. Try and have an enjoyable hol, regardless of the lack of alcohol and the lack of food after 22.00.

this will be my last reply, you know nothing about me, i am actually a very decent person, who does not actually drink a lot, i have underlining health problems so cant do that, i have a shandy, like i said earlier, i have been to india on many occasions and this is the first time that this has happened while i was there, me and my wife of 28 years like to go out together on holiday after enjoying the sun all day and go out for a meal and a drink, we do not like to be told to sup up at 10pm, which is a little early, 11pm would av been a better time for it all, there are actually 8 of us going and every one of us have the same response to this, i suppose it takes all to make a world, im sorry if i sounded a little loud but when i was told about this from a 3rd party, i was relay upset about it, as i work for 50 weeks a year and work every weekend, so when i go on holiday i like to have a bit of a social life at night, like most of the normal people i know. thank you for your help anyway, and try not to judge people like yourself and many others on this site judged me from the first posting. i will enjoy my holiday 10pm or no 10pm. thank you

You are not the only person who works 50 weeks a year and on weekends but you somehow feel that this is significant, and justification for your rant. Other countries don't owe you a favour - you choose to go. Btw, it's a bit of a case of pot calling kettle black, as pubs/drinking establishment around major football grounds in the UK also shut up tight on the day of a major game. Not all but it is not unknown.

You should know, for future reference, that typing in capital letters on the internet, is akin to shouting. Hope you and your friends have a hunky dory time and manage to survive all the negative factors that the government has put in place to conspire against you and your enjoyment.

I have just returned from Goa and whilst i was there the policy was for the bars and restaurants to stop serving from 11pm some do close but there are also a lot that stay open they just keep it quiet! Food is served all through the night so you will have no problem getting that after 10pm. On a positive note i actually found that the early clsoing of bars and restaurants did not affect my holiday and i enjoyed it all the same. Have fun :)

thank you so much, i think it is all a bit of chines whispers, i was told through a friend of a friend that the bars are shutting early, but i have heard now off more people saying that 11pm is the time they shut, i can deal with that, we never stop out till after 12 in Goa anyway, to far to go and to much money to spend to be stopping in the pubs all night and staying in bed all day,you can do that in the uk. a lot of people on this site judged me without really knowing to much about me, i think they thought i was a bit of a *** head ( excuse the french )im not i just thought that 10pm was a little to soon, i respect the indian laws as i said i have been there on many occasions. and i did not know that typing in capitols is called swearing, i will be typing in small letters in future. once again thankyou.

Hello Steve - I am only joining in here re the use of capitals. Some years ago a very dear friend began to lose her sight. We were advised then by a specialist working with the blind that people with impaired eyesight find capitals more difficult to read than the usual lower case.. More recently another friend has lost her sight and thanked me for using normal lettering in any note I sent to her because all capitals were so difficult for her to decipher. It was only after joining and taking part in VT for a while I discovered they are also a sort of shorthand for shouting!
